Tom Aspinall Injures His Leg Just 15 Seconds From UFC London Main Event

Headlining a UFC card in the O2 Arena for the second time this year, Tom Aspinal took the American, Curtis Blayde. These two top-10 heavyweights were potentially fighting for a title Francois Ngannou and it was Blaydes who raised his hand as Aspinall was unable to continue due to injury just 15 seconds into the fight.

Behind England’s blockbuster performances Nathaniel Wood, Molly McCann and Paddy Pimblet, Aspinall had a huge weight on his shoulders to perform. Unfortunately for the Briton, as well as the fans, the fight was over before it even started.

The main event of the UFC in London

There’s not much to break down for the main event. It was over in seconds. It was shaping up to be a good fight, with both men playing and trading from the start. The injury came after Aspinall landed a big kick to the back leg and backed into his stance and immediately fell, writhing in pain. Herb Dean stepped in to stop the fight.

What’s next for Blaydes?

It’s one of three things for the winner of the UFC London main event. First, a title shot to Francis Ngannou as the champion is healthy and ready to go. He is now riding a three-fight winning run. Facing Ngannou would be a trilogy, with Blaydes having lost twice before.

The second option is a title eliminator against the winner of the UFC Paris main event between Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa. Gane is the former interim heavyweight champion, but came up short when he challenged for the undisputed belt in January, suffering his first career loss. Tuivasa bounced back from three straight losses in 2019 to enjoy a streak of five straight knockouts, three of which earned him the bonus night performance. The biggest of those wins came last time out against Derrick Lewis.

Blaydes vs. the UFC Paris main event winner would shed light on the next title challenger and ensure an entertaining fight thanks to the mix of styles.

The third option is of course rematch between Blaydes and Aspinall. We don’t know what the injury is yet and it may mean Aspinall is out for a long time. It’s unclear if Blaydes will want to wait that long. Everything will be revealed by next week.

What we do know, the heavyweight division is back and has a lot of competitive fights on offer.
