Eduardo Perez took care of the cases against the oldest competitor in the history of The ultimate fighter.
Team No. 1 pick Amanda Nunes showed her all-around game against a bold Bobby Maximus, finally putting him out with a fierce pitch before the end of the first round.
At first, Maximus controlled the larger Perez with his wrestling (there was a nearly 30-pound weight difference with the 6-foot-5 Perez coming in at the heavyweight limit of 266 pounds and Maximus at 237 pounds) and landed a lot of his own ground strikes, but Perez remained patient and worked his way to the feet until he could create separation. Perez sliced Maximus with his jab and then negated a takedown attempt before going to work with heavy strikes from top position. Referee Mike Beltran gave Maximus time to fight back, but had to call the fight off at 3:58.
It was an impressive performance for Perez (4-1), an American Kickboxing Academy product who is one of the favorites to win the TUF 30 heavyweight tournament. He advances to the semi-finals with the victory.
At 43, Maximus (5-4)* set a record as the oldest fighter to ever appear on TUFF. The Canadian fighter expressed frustration over the loss, his first fight since 2009. However, in an interview ahead of this week’s episode, Maximus told MMA Fighting he was happy with his experience on the show. and that one of his goals was simply to prove he could still compete at the UFC level. He went 1-2 in his first stint with the promotion in 2006, scoring a first-round submission win over Kris Rotharmel.
With this defeat, the team of Julianna Peña sees its lead in the series fall to 3-2. Peña selected his No. 2 flyweight pick Juliana Miller (2-1) to fight Team Nunes’ No. 1 pick Claire Guthrie (3-1). There’s a lot of drama built into this matchup as Guthrie previously handed Miller his only professional loss. Additionally, Guthrie and teammate Brogan Walker became good friends with Maximus, leading Miller to fear that he was sharing Team Peña’s secrets with the other team.
Also in this episode, Team Nunes heavyweight Chandler Cole injured his elbow in practice. He was diagnosed with a torn UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) and told the injury won’t heal soon, but he is medically cleared to compete.
Here are the first round results so far:
Zac Pauga defeats. Nyle Bartling via unanimous decision
Kaytlin Neil defeats. Helen Peralta via split decision
Mohammed Usman defeats. Mitchell Sipe by unanimous decision
Laura Gallardo beats. Kathryn Paprocki by Majority Decision
Eduardo Perez beats. Bobby Maximus via TKO (strikes) (R1, 3:58)
On next week’s episode, Team Peña’s Juliana Miller fights Team Nunes’ Claire Guthrie in a flyweight bout.
