Ronda Rousey is ‘a JOKE in the MMA world’ and ruined her legacy with WWE, claims Julianna Pena

Ronda Rousey is ‘kind of a JOKE in the MMA world’ and ruined her legacy by becoming a ‘sellout’ in WWE rather than rebuilding her reputation from two infamous knockouts, claims UFC champ Julianna Pena

  • Ronda Rousey had a transformative effect on the world of women’s MMA
  • She was a trailblazer but her legacy was partly tainted by her last two fights
  • Rousey was badly knocked out by Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes
  • Julianna Pena says ‘deep down’ Rousey will be bothered by how this ended

Ronda Rousey has become a “joke” in MMA circles after “selling out” to WWE following her ignominious exit from competitive sport, according to Julianna Pena.

Pena, the UFC bantamweight champion, took aim at the 35-year-old pioneer of women’s combat sports for what she saw as a failure to “get back on the horse”.

Rousey ended her MMA career after being brutally knocked out by Holly Holm with a headbutt, then stopped in one round by Amanda Nunes.

It was an abrupt end to one of the most exciting careers and Rousey was delighted with her way to the top, performing her trademark armbar seemingly at will.

Pena is now the queen of the bantamweight division after producing one of the biggest upsets of all time by beating Nunes.

And she wants Rousey back, even though she admits that’s unlikely to happen.

The 32-year-old said: “Ronda is such old news, isn’t it?” I think what’s amazing about her is that she opened the door and she destroyed people in 10 seconds, and she became a star because she destroyed people in the first turn, and it’s great – but she was knocked out twice and never came back. So how legit is it?

“She had to go to pro wrestling. And I get that and I think that’s great. But as a fighter and a competitor, I know that — deep down — it probably really bothers her, that she left after two knockout losses and never came back to make a name for herself.

“If it really really bothers her and if it really bothers her at the end of the day to know that, you know, her legacy is kind of ruined by the fact that she never came back and never back on the horse, so I would like to invite her to come back please — and if she wanted to come back, I would welcome her with open arms.

She continued, “That’s what I’m saying, she’s kind of a joke in the MMA world now, because she’s – what’s the word?” – sold.

“Like, a little selling there. I mean, I guess I get it, right? It’s like pro wrestling is fake, you get paid millions of dollars, I get it.

“But for me, for real shit, because like the ‘you’re the real, real deal,’ I’d say it’s in the UFC. And if she ever wants that real smoke, I’m ready.

Nunes suffered a shock loss to Julianna Pena at UFC 269 last year in their title fight

Pena defeated Nunes in December last year and the two women are the trainers for the next series of The Ultimate Fighter.

It will be fascinating to see how their rematch plays out, especially with Nunes looking so oddly offbeat when they first meet.

Their fight is expected to take place in July or August but a date has yet to be confirmed.
