The former UFC light heavyweight champion John Blachowicz had a very good showing when he faced the No. 3 ranked light heavyweight Aleksandar Rakic. Despite ending the contest in an anti-climactic fashion, this victory was very important for Blachowicz as he tries to regain the title he lost in a one-sided loss to the current champion. Glover Teixeira back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi at UFC 267. Now that he is back in the win column with a strong performance against Rakic, a top contender and considered by some to be the next possible champion , Blachowicz is now closer to having the opportunity to reclaim the 205-pound belt.
What’s next for Jan Blachowicz?
Title Shot: Winner of Teixeira against Prochazka
Many believed that with a victory over the former champion, Alexander Rakivs would be rewarded with a title shot against the winner of the UFC 275 main event between Glover Teixeira and Jiri Prochazka will take place on June 11 in Singapore. However, Jan Blachowicz stole some of that momentum from Rakic with his latest win, as well as winning seven of his last eight contests, with the only loss coming to current champion Glover Teixeira. In a scenario where Teixeira retains his belt, a rematch with Blachowicz could be very intriguing, especially with the scenario that Jan “didn’t show up” when he lost the title.

Fight a new champion in Jiri Prochazka, if he becomes victorious at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, that would also be extremely interesting. This new match will feature two fighting styles clashing; Prochazka, who consistently applies forward pressure with creative striking, and Blachowicz who tries to counter-hit using a very reliable defense on the feet. This option seems the most likely as the weight class doesn’t have too many contenders who seem ready for a title.
Winner of Smith against Ankalaev
If the title shot doesn’t go through, the next biggest fight for the former 205-pound king would be to face the winner of the contest between Anthony Smith and Magomed Ankalaev who is targeted for UFC 277 on July 30. Smith and Ankalaev arrive with a lot of momentum. Smith is on a three-game winning streak, all ending before the second round, and Ankalaev is currently on an eight-game winning streak. Even though both are on impressive streaks, a win over a big name like Blachowicz would help them push for a title. Jan Blachowicz will bring an interesting style match regardless of who emerges victorious in this July contest.
Smith is well-rounded, with plenty of experience, and has become a grizzled veteran who can bring an action-packed fight to fans if he steps into the octagon with Blachowicz for a chance at a big name on his RESUME. Ankalaev resembles Rakic in having good skills all over and looking like a future champion. However, a potential contest with the former champion may test Ankalev’s durability and fighting IQ while also showcasing parts of the Dagestani fighter’s game we’ve never seen before.
