Morning report: Luke Rockhold frustrated with comeback plans: ‘There are a lot of guys but none of them want to sign the contract’

Luke Rockhold’s road back to the UFC is proving to be more difficult than he imagined.

Last year, Rockhold announced that after a long hiatus, he was looking to return to MMA and have another run for the middleweight title. At the time, Rockhold was aiming for a comeback fight against rival Chris Weidman, but Weidman having recently suffered a catastrophic leg injury, this fight is clearly not an option, but even outside of that, Rockhold apparently had to. hard to find a suitable returning opponent. him. Talk with Helen Yee Recently, the former middleweight champion lamented the current state of the 185-pound division, saying that so far none of the top-ranked guys have been ready to fight it.

“There are a lot of guys but none of them want to sign the contract. Everyone wants to run, ”said Rockhold. “There are guys who make sense. Uriah Hall was an option – he didn’t want that. Kevin Holland was an option – it doesn’t seem like an option. (Darren) Until that happened, I think people jumped on it. I’m not up against anybody, (Paulo_ Costa, anyone in that lineup. I mean, the Italian kid (Marvin Vettori) jumped in – he beat Kevin Holland and he fought for the title. I didn’t just don’t understand it.He beat a guy who just lost.

“A lot of these guys need to be tested, need to be tested and I’m pretty sure I’m out of a world title fight. I was inactive but needed some free time but there are also injuries and everything that I needed to assess and then take care of. So it’s not exactly my choice but the free time suited me well. I have healed all of my problems and am ready to go. I just need a fight, an opponent, a contract.

Rockhold isn’t exactly coming out of a world title fight as he’s suggested. Rockhold’s last fight was a failure up to 205 pounds in July 2019 where he was knocked out by Jan Blachowicz. Rockhold went on to clarify this while reaffirming his broader point that despite his recent record and inactivity, he believes his credentials trump any ranking number.

“I’m here, I work, I come,” Rockhold said. “These guys, they’re setting there trying to protect, saying I’m unranked, trying to see what they wanna do but guess what, my last fight was against Yoel Romero. He lacked weight (and) it was a world title fight. that was at 85, so I’m fighting the potential number one contender who is currently the light heavyweight champion. My track record and status speak for themselves and these kids really haven’t done anything, so they don’t have room to talk and run. They must step up and earn their name in the game. “

Rockhold’s credentials are not to sneeze at. Former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion, Rockhold holds notable wins over Chris Weidman, Michael Bisping, Lyoto Machida and Jacare Souza.

Rockhold also looks set to fight just about anyone currently in the top 10 middleweight, aside from Derek Brunson, who is his training partner. Aside from Brunson though, Rockhold threw out a number of names but said it’s just a matter of the UFC doing it.

“I’ve worked hard, I’m doing everything I can on my own and I’m just waiting for a contract to come up, that’s something that excites me,” said Rockhold. “I’ve waited so long, I’ve done a lot in sports, I’m not coming back just to come back. I’m coming back to get excited and I want to get the fans excited and I want to race. I know I can. When I’m healthy I’m focused, I’m present, I don’t see a lot of people who can compete with me.

In an interview with The Schmo, Rockhold also dropped this pearl of wisdom.

“You know I wish him good luck. You know, it’s difficult. I don’t know what it’s like to have those little female shins, you know? I don’t know, because I broke my first kick in the fight but somehow it didn’t. I just stayed strong.

He then almost immediately went on to say that you have to let the old oxen go towards him and Michael Bisping burying the hatchet.
