Morning Report: Conor McGregor advises Alexander Volkanovski on how to beat Islam Makhachev: ‘Be a bowling ball’

Conor McGregor keeps shooting everyone.

On Saturday, after Islam Makhachev submitted Charles Oliveira to claim the lightweight title at UFC 280, McGregor immediately took to Twitter to blast Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov, saying he had “all the tools” to beat them both. McGregor has since deleted those Tweets, but soon after the former two-division champion decided he needed to aim wider, targeting UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who appears to be on the front lines to challenge the new champ.

“My two old belts,” McGregor said. “On two small ticks. This fight makes 10 buys.

Unsurprisingly, Volkanovski didn’t care about McGregor calling out his name, and so “The Great” retaliated, throwing McGregor’s own words in his face, which spawned an exchange of messages where McGregor gave Volkanovski props and the featherweight champion laid the groundwork for a future fight between the two.

Then, as a final parting gift, McGregor offered Volkanovski his words of wisdom on how to approach a lightweight title shot.

“And we keep dancing,” McGregor said. “Good. I was in your exact shoes once, don’t forget. 145 to come. Good luck. I would say go heavier. Rugby days. Your conditioning right now as I see it, I don’t know, but bowling ball style is your best bet.

“Aim to headbutt the chest cavity.”

McGregor captured the UFC lightweight title in 2016, stopping Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in what remains arguably the best performance of the superstar’s career. Since then, however, things have taken a downward turn. Aside from a decided drop in fight frequency (McGregor has only competed four times since 2016, five if you count his foray into boxing), McGregor has lost three of his last four fights, recently breaking his leg in a fight. of his trilogy fight with Dustin. Poirier at UFC 264. Following that injury, McGregor spent much of the last year tending to his injury, and now he’s currently filming his role in the new Relay film. However, with that behind him, “Notorious” promises a big comeback for his fans.

“I feel crazy confident. Calm. Detached from emotion. Aware of what I have to do and realize it. Visualization. I see everything. Clear. This movie ends, I’m back. I will have completed several fights by the time this movie comes out.
