Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be semi-retired, and he may be more of a show fighter than the dominant technician he once was – his last professional fight was against MMA star Conor McGregor in 2017 – but he is still undefeated and not someone very non-pro would rather enter the ring against.
However, that’s exactly what YouTuber celebrity Logan Paul will be doing this weekend.
Paul has a professional fight under his belt, which he lost to fellow YouTuber KSI – for the uninitiated, KSI runs a gaming commentary and has fought YouTuber Joe Weller as well. Mayweather has a perfect professional record of 50-0, which makes him, on paper, a huge gap.
That hasn’t stopped Mayweather from heavily promoting the event, of course, and it will be featured on Showtime Pay-Per-View.
Mayweather vs. Paul
Dated: Sunday June 6
Time: 8 p.m. ET
Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
TV and live broadcast: Showtime PPV and Showtime.com
Chances: Mayweather -1600, Paul +700
The fight against Sunday exhibitions is promoted as “bragging rights” for a reason. Paul and his youngest (and biggest in-ring competitor) Jake Paul called Mayweather, claiming he wasn’t the PPV draw he once was.
“Who else is Floyd going to fight that sells millions of pay-per-views? He needs us more than we need him,” Jake Paul told CBS Sports’ Brian Campbell (h / t Boxing scene).
Mayweather, 44, wants to prove he still has it and thinks he can make the hobbyist’s job easier.
“I believe in working smarter, not harder. So if it’s something easy like [the Paul fight], a legalized bank robbery, I have to do it. I have to do it, ”Mayweather said during the Inside Mayweather vs. Paul promotional show (h / t Ryan harkness by MMA Mania).
Indeed, it doesn’t look like a very fair fight, but Paul does have a few physical perks. He is 18 years younger and has a height advantage of four inches. He is also expected to weigh around 30 pounds more.
Paul also enters the fight with a lot of confidence.
“I walk into this ring with the energy of possibility,” said Paul, by Michael charboneau of Men’s diary. “I don’t think anyone is going to doubt my boxing skills after this fight.”
Yet these benefits are unlikely to be enough. Although Mayweather is older and shorter, he has years of experience in the ring and is one of the best defensive fighters of all time. He should be able to play the long game and win.
According to Show time, it will be an exhibition in eight rounds. Expect Mayweather to win most, if not all, and the fight.
Those who log in to view the exhibit will also have three fights under card, one of which will feature former NFL star Chad Johnson, although his opponent has yet to be determined. Jarrett Hurd vs. Luis Arias and Jean Pascal vs. Badou Jack II will also be playing.
