Khamzat Chimaev is preparing for his return to the UFC after a fierce battle with COVID-19 and, as usual, he’s aiming high. Not only is he looking for a UFC belt, but he has his eye on three different weight divisions.
Asked in an interview with ESPN if he plans to go back to 170 or 185 pounds, Chimaev said he could do either or even 205 pounds.
“Two weight classes are waiting for me, 85 or 70, I can go fight 205,” Chimaev said (via MMA Fighting). “I’ve been sparring with the guys who are, like the top 10 in 205. I don’t want to say the names of those guys, but the guys know when they trained with me what’s going on there.
“I can also beat Blachowicz. Israel [Adesanya] also, he loses with, like, fighting Blachowicz. Blachowicz is not a wrestler.
Chimaev may have lofty views, but he knows he has work to do to get to where he wants to be. The fights against Leon Edwards in the spring failed due to complications from COVID-19, fights that would ultimately place him at the top of a division. Now he’s sitting outside healing, with a promising return date for the summer.
“I didn’t fight for a long time, I haven’t had so many fights, but I know who I am,” he said. “I just have to show it. Now I’m back. Give me someone, whatever. For me it doesn’t matter. I will fight with everyone. When I’m healthy I’ll fight anyone, everyone. It doesn’t matter, Brock Lesnar.
With three weight classes to choose from, we have no doubts the UFC will be looking to put Chimaev back in the cage against someone who can get their 2020 hopes back on track. Who do you want to see Khamzat face when he returns, Maniacs?
