Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards clash at UFC 278 press conference

This will be the second time Usman and Edwards have faced each other. The two faced off in December 2015, months after Usman claimed the winner of The ultimate fighter season 21, with Usman claiming a unanimous decision.

This will also mark Usman’s sixth attempt at a defense of the UFC Welterweight Championship. He claimed the title with a one-sided decision victory over Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 in March 2019.

Since then, FanSided MMA’s 2021 Fighter of the Year has successfully defended the title against Colby Covington twice, Jorge Masvidal twice and Gilbert Burns once.

Usman was undefeated in the Octagon, and his only loss in his MMA came in his second professional fight.

Edwards hasn’t lost a fight since the loss to Usman. He has gone undefeated in his last 10 fights, with nine wins and one no-contest.

Edwards had a winning streak that included victories over Vicente Luque, Bryan Barbarena, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos.

After a fight with Belal Muhammad that ended in a no-contest, Edwards picked up a win over Nate Diaz at UFC 263.

UFC 276: Israel Adesanya vs. Jared Cannonier takes place Saturday, July 2, 2022, live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Follow FanSided MMA, who is on hand, for all your news and highlights.
