John Dodson calls Demetrious Johnson the best MMA fighter in history

John Dodson wasn’t the only flyweight trailblazer to succeed this month.

Dodson’s successful bare-knuckle boxing debut with an explosive knockout last Saturday was preceded by former UFC champion Demetrious Johnson’s success the day before. “Mighty Mouse” returned to action this past weekend, knocking out Adriano Moraes with a spectacular flying knee knockout to win the ONE Championship flyweight title.

Dodson congratulated Johnson on his big win and went above and beyond to say he is the greatest fighter in MMA history.

“To be honest, I put him above Jon Jones,” Dodson told TMZ in a recent interview. “I know Jon Jones is my teammate and sparring partner, and I’m not even saying it because he beat me, but Demetrious Johnson is the most complete mixed martial artist the world has seen.

“Like, he’s the only one I know that combines it so well between his wrestling, his striking and also his jiu-jitsu. Like he’s been so creative with how to get submissions, how to finish people off, and so on. he’s just a very smart fighter.

Both Dodson and Johnson have a lot of history together. During their UFC tenure, the two fought a total of 50 minutes in the octagon. They have been in title fights twice where Johnson successfully defended his belt each time in very exciting and at times very competitive fights.

Although Dodson is 0-2 against Johnson, he would welcome a third fight. He could see their rivalry playing out like the famous tetralogy between Pride FC legends Wanderlei Silva and Quinton Jackson.

“In the near future, if this window actually opened up for me, I would definitely jump on it because I see this as a Wanderlei Silva and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson storyline,” Dodson said. “Wanderlei smashed Rampage twice in a row, and the third time (Rampage) had a demolishing finish and let him know (why) he became champion in another organization. So from Pride FC to UFC, the same could be from UFC to ONE (Championship).

Dodson would be open to competing in MMA like they’ve done twice before, or if his nemesis wanted to try something new, he’d welcome that challenge as well.

“If Demetrious wanted to do barknuckle, he can let me know,” Dodson said. “We can sit any day of the week.”
