Israel Adesanya: ‘Trust me’, Robert Whittaker is not a good guy – I told you last time

Israel Adesanya says he understood Robert Whittaker before they squared off in the octagon for the first time.

Whittaker blamed “ego” for his knockout loss to Adesanya nearly three years ago. He swore to fire a different fighter, but the champion sees the same outcome in front of him.

“It was his ego last time, but I called him from the fight,” Adesanya said in an interview with his sponsor Stake ahead of his UFC 271 rematch with former champion Whittaker. “I said at the time that he was acting out of character, and I also said that he was not himself.

“People kept saying he was a good guy, but believe me he’s not. You don’t see that behind the scenes. And now he’s admitted that it was his ego that got the better of him – well I told you, he should have listened to me!

“What else can he say?” He said after the fight it was the best he ever felt, well I don’t forget that. If he can improve he will have to bring the best again and I will beat him again.

Whittaker fought back in the title hunt with victories over top contenders Darren Till, Jared Cannonier and, most recently, Kelvin Gastelum. Adesanya, meanwhile, successfully returned to the middleweight division with a second victory over Marvin Vettori after falling short for the light heavyweight title then held by Jan Blachowicz.

Bettors have Adesanya a strong favorite to retain the belt after returning to form.

“My prediction is that I’m going to fuck Whittaker again,” Adesanya said. “He can’t stay with me, so I know he will have to struggle. Last time he said Kevin Gastelum gave the plan on how to beat Adesanya”, and now he says ‘Jan gave the plan’…he has to write his own plan. If he wants to copy the work from someone else, so try by all means, because it went so well for him last time when we fought.

“Whittaker might have learned from his mistakes last time for about a lap, but believe me he will come back to those mistakes. Once he feels what he felt last time, he won’t know. who to turn to. Besides, he didn’t even attack me last time, he didn’t really feel me. You can ask any of my previous opponents, they’ll tell you. So , once he feels me in a grappling hook, he will be shaken again.

With a recent win under his belt, Adesanya proved to himself that he was still the force he thought he was. His new goal is to establish his dominance at 185 pounds before thinking about other challenges.

“‘When I beat Whittaker, honestly, I don’t have any immediate plans of what to do next,'” he said. line them up and flip them in. And once I get past the split on my terms, then I could step in and do another side mission at a different weight.

One match that was highlighted early on was a meeting with Alex Pereira, who knocked out Adesanya in kickboxing. The champ is open to the game, but not until Pereira proves himself.

“In terms of the fight against Alex Pereira, he only had one fight, so it’s still a bit premature,” he said. “Let’s see how he does in other fights, but I’m looking forward to this arc in my story.”
