The man who just can’t stay in retirement is starting over. Floyd Mayweather will step into the ring for another exhibition bout. On May 14, he will face a former sparring partner, Don Moore, on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai..
Known as possibly the greatest defensive fighter who ever lived, Floyd is a former Olympic bronze medalist and throughout his career he has faced the toughest fighters. Beating Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley and Ricky Hatton, his career was not without controversy. Often accused of choosing his fights to catch the big amounts too soon or when they were already on the slide. He was widely considered to have dodged a debuting Manny Pacquiao when he beat the former great in 2015. Floyd left the game with a perfect, well-maintained 49-0 record.
But he couldn’t stay out for long. Risking not only his inheritance but also what remained of his reputation, he took a bizarre, albeit lucrative, series of fights. In 2017, Mayweather returned to the ring to take on MMA bad boy Conor Macgregor in his professional boxing debut. In a fight full of rabbit punches and illegal beatings from the Irish MMA star, Mayweather headed for an easy TKO to officially end his pro career at 50 ties with no losses. Perhaps even Pretty boywho was now called Moneyrealized that this type of cynical record massage was too much for fight fans. He continued to fight a series of non-boxers but never again in an official capacity.
After his much-derided exposure to YouTuber Logan Paul last year, it looked like the sideshow may have come to its final, humiliating conclusion, and Mayweather returned to boxing a boxer.
Don Moore has a less eye-catching record than Floyd, but at the very least been a professional boxer. Trained by the late Roger Mayweather, he had a career that was mostly about helping other fighters along the way. Longtime training partner of Floyd Mayweather, Moore retired in 2016 after knocking out DeShaun Williams with an 18-0-1 record.
