Fighters pick winner of Julianna Pena vs. Amanda Nunes II

A rematch of one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history takes place this weekend in Dallas, Texas, when Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes share the Octagon for the second time. UFC 277 is a pay-per-view event and will air exclusively on ESPN+.

Pena stunned fans when she earned a second-round submission victory over then-two-time champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 in December. Despite entering as a massive underdog on the night, Pena was able to ride through many of Nunes’ best shots and ended up trading heavy strikes in round two before finally wearing down the champion and submitting her. with a rear choke.

It was a shocking end to Nunes’ reign as bantamweight champion as she seemed to run out of options and ended up tapping a rear-naked choke submission. She will have the chance to reclaim her title this weekend at UFC 277.

Pena vs Nunes II Predictions

UFC fighters have shared their predictions for Julianna Pena vs. Amanda Nunes II ahead of this weekend’s main event. Here is what they said:

Jamahal Hill

“I have to go with Amanda. I think Amanda took it too lightly the first time around, didn’t take it seriously, and Julianna was just a fucking deal. (via James Lynch)

Adrian Yanez

“That first one, I definitely got Amanda Nunes to win, and Julianna Pena shocked me with that win. But man, I don’t know if I still want to doubt her or if I should pick her. I’ll probably still learn from Amanda.(via James Lynch)

Jack Della Maddalena

” It’s difficult. I think we’re going to see these two fight for the third time, so I think we’ll see Amanda Nunes win this one. (via James Lynch)

Jasmine Jasudavicius

“I think that one is difficult. I think Nunes will take it, though. I don’t know why but I believe in her. I think after a loss, you know, there’s a different type of hunger that sets in, and I think it’s going to be victorious. (via James Lynch)

Jeff Molina

“I’m interested to see how Nunes comes back from this type of performance that she had. She looked awful. Not only did she look awful, but she quit, which isn’t the type of reaction you want to see from a world champion – that she blatantly quit. I wonder how she comes back from that. Again, I wonder what the odds of this fight will be, but I might lean towards Pena (via James Lynch)

Johnny Munoz Jr.

“I think Nunes takes the rematch. I feel like she has a lot more to prove on this one. I’m not saying the first one was a fluke, but I think sometimes, you see, with dominant champions, they tend to be a little complacent. Maybe a little cozy. Life is fine outside of combat, so you kind of lose that hunger or edge. But for the rematch, I think Nunes takes it. (via James Lynch)

Josh Emmet

“I don’t know. She surprised me that one. Julianna Pena is a great fighter, but I thought Nunes was the goat, so that surprised me. I thought it would be a real competitive fight, but she then got the win so who knows what happens its hard to choose but just looking at this fight how well pena did i don’t know styles make the fights , I feel like I should walk away with Pena.(via James Lynch)

Michael Waterson

“I think it will really depend on where Amanda is, in her headspace. Because, yeah, Nunes slowed down, but in my opinion, I think Julianna had to get in front to slow her down, but you know, sometimes people hit a breaking point. What happened was that Nunes threw everything she had at Pena, and Pena just took it because she’s a dog. And then Nunes said, what the fuck do I have? And then all of his confidence and all of that started to slow down.

“And that’s just my opinion from the outside. Who knows what was going on in Nunes personal life. It’s a hard thing for all of us to sit down and judge a fight because we don’t know what happened on their side, what happened in their personal lives, during fight week , during the cut, there are so many things. To ensure victory on any given night, the stars must absolutely align.

“The Nunes side are absolutely going to have to tackle Pena’s range and grit and figure out how to get around that. His jab was money, man. His shots were money. They might not look powerful, but you get hit enough, and they add up, and there’s nothing you can do about it. Maybe if they address that, I think it will lead to an interesting fight. [I’ll pick] Pena. (via James Lynch)

Bryan Barberena

“I think Nunes takes the rematch. I think it will be a close fight, but Nunes will come refocused with a new game plan and everything. (via James Lynch)

Dwight Grant

“I started watching and catching up on TUF yesterday, I’m going to go with Amanda Nunes. To me, she’s like the best ever, you know. Not just because she beat Ronda and Cyborg but his style and his confidence in the pocket and his exits and his entrances there are times when you look at certain fighters, like Fedor, you think of guys like that When they go to fight they just have a tunnel vision, and I see it happened with Amanda Nunes, so I’m going with her.(via James Lynch)

Neil Magny

“I think Pena wins it again and shocks the world for the second time. I think Julianna Pena is on a different level right now in life with her training and her mindset. She will be able to go over there and do the job again.(via James Lynch)

Jack Shore

“I think Pena will start again. I saw Dana say it in an interview, Amanda is a multi-millionaire, she’s been there and done it. She has family now, and I don’t think the hunger can be there like Pena. Look at the last fight, it wasn’t like it was a win by chance, she was very successful, Amanda, but Pena stayed there and resisted and grew strong.

If I’m being honest, I see this one going pretty much the same way. I think Amanda will be a little more careful, but ultimately, she has that killer instinct, and when she starts throwing those bombs, she doesn’t want to let go. I think Pena is tough and durable, I think she catches up to her a bit later, probably this time. I don’t think Amanda will blow her joint this soon. (via James Lynch)

Beneil Dariush

“I think Amanda is feeling the pressure of cutting weight at 135. I think if Julianna can do what she did last time, I think she will be successful again. This time will be more difficult because she might end up losing 2-3 rounds this time around and then come out stronger, but she has to be ready for that.” (via MMA Crazy)

Gilbert Burns

“I hope Amanda gets the win. But I don’t know. I think Julianna Pena kinda got into her mind, especially with The Ultimate Fighter. I hope Amanda wins, but if I had to bet, I would bet on Julianna. I think Julianna is going to win. (via MMA Crazy)

Miesha Tate

“The only difference this time is that now the rest of the world knows she can win too. She knew it, I knew it, her team knew it. She’s done it once before. So now everyone everyone knows. (via MMA Crazy)

Brendan Allen

“I think it will go in the same direction. Just like you saw in the first one, Julianna is going to set her pace and break her. I think she’ll be able to do that. (via MMA Crazy)

Holly Holm

“I think anything can happen with this fight. I think every time somebody gets a little bit of that, how do they prove themselves to themselves… You know, a lot of people say I want to prove this and that to the world, but you also want to prove it to yourself- even and give you the strength to go forward. It could go one way or the other way with Nunes not letting it happen again. I honestly think the fight can go both ways. (via MMA Crazy)
