Even with the COVID restrictions surrounding club meetings, many organizations are still finding ways to resume normally scheduled events. Along with this, many clubs in Creighton have also seen a big increase in membership numbers due to the size of the freshman class, and the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Club is no stranger to this.
Last year the club weren’t as active due to Creighton’s COVID guidelines, but this year they’re back and ready to train. The MMA Club has seen a further surge in popularity this semester, with around 120 new members and an average of 50 members showing up for meetings. The club tackles many styles of fighting, from jiu jitsu to boxing. Griffin Barnum, the club president, said their goal was to focus on self-defense.
âThe main goal is to prepare people for different fighting styles and to expose people to different fighting styles,â Barnum said.
Starting next week, the club will be going from a meeting once a week to twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays, due to its sudden increase in size. During the meetings, members learn and practice a new technique with the instructors, review common mistakes, and answer other questions, which in turn lead them to fight against each other. Each meeting focuses on a different aspect of combat, such as hitting and kicking, and even tackles basic work in the style of jiu jitsu.
Not interested in learning different fighting techniques? The club also hosts more informal meetings to watch UFC fights, which is a great way for potential new members to meet current members and bond around mixed martial arts.
âThat’s actually one of the reasons I chose to come to Creighton,â second student John McCance said of the club.
During his college research, an MMA club was one of the biggest parts of his criteria.
âCreighton was one of the only colleges to have an MMA club,â McCance said.
