The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Fight Island this fall to host UFC 280.
UFC 280 is scheduled to take place on October 22, 2022, live from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
There have only been two fights added to the card so far, the first in the welterweight division between a pair of ranked welterweights in Belal Muhammad and Sean Brady.
The other fight just added is the one we’ve all been waiting for, a vacant UFC lightweight championship bout between ancient UFC lightweight champion Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira and no. 4 rated Islam Makhachev.
It’s such a big fight for the lightweight division, it’s very exciting to hear that he’s finally been signed.
Oliveira has had one of the most impressive runs in the sport’s history in recent years, and Makhachev’s winning streak lives up to his own.
Following his loss to Paul Felder in December 2017, Oliveira has since won his last 11 straight fights.
And, following the loss to Adriano Martins in October 2015, the only defeat of his entire career, Makhachev has since won his last 10 consecutive years. This is the Khabib versus Tony fight that we never had.
Remember back in 2020 when these two were set to face off, it was the fifth time they faced each other? Each man was coming on a 12-game winning streak. We have that, and the contrast of styles is also very similar.
Oliveira is one of, if not the most dangerous fighter in the whole sport right now. 10 of those last 11 wins have come at the finish, with the only man to go the distance being former interim champion Tony Ferguson.
With five more seconds to go in that first round, “Do Bronx” would have finished it as well.
Then we have Makhachev, who doesn’t have too many ranked opponents on his resume, but has gone through everyone he’s fought. The contenders don’t want to fight him, as does a rising Khabib Nurmagomedov, for fear of losing their place in the standings.
If there’s one criticism fans might have had about Makhachev in the past, it’s that he wasn’t much of a finisher.
Well, going into this fight, he finished his last four straight opponents.
We only have three months to wait until this fight ends!
Who leaves UFC 280 as UFC lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira or Islam Makhachev?

I became a combat sports fan at the age of 12. I was scrolling through the channels and landed on versus, where the WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. It was the first fight I saw, and the fight that got me hooked on the sport. Since then, the sport has grown so rapidly, and my goal is to enlighten everyone on what is happening in sport today.
