This is the third meeting between the two fighters. The first time they fought in 2017, it was ruled a draw and Alvarez won a majority decision over GGG on September 15, 2018.

Golovkin, the challenger, goes first to the ring. The arena rocks like army of seven countries blows through the loudspeakers to mark his entrance.

Round 1: Golovkin scores with work from the bell. Canelo looks to throw his own jab as they take their time to measure up. Step-in left hook by Canelo. Straight look at the body by Canelo. Not much out of either fighter with less than a minute to go in the first round. Canelo having more success with his jab, he went through the first three minutes without incident.

2nd round: Canelo lands a jab, then gets adventurous with a left lunge. Golovkin gets busier with his jab. Canelo scores, but fails to land his heaviest shots. Jab from Canelo, Golovkin attacks the body. Canelo just stings. Right hand to the body for Canelo. The action is still somewhat hesitant through two rounds.

Round 3: Big counter left by Canelo lands, biggest blow of the fight so far. Canelo doubles on the jab. Golovkin uses his own jab to settle things. Canelo storms forward. Golovkin connects with a jab. Canelo lands one of his own.

Round 4: Canelo chains punches well, with Golovkin not being able to do much beyond the jab. Canelo also works his jab. Right hand over the top for Canelo, then right to the body. A combo sets up a looking right hand to the chin for Canelo. Golovkin lands a jab, but Canelo backs him up again with the right.

Round 5: Golovkin triples on a jab. Canelo stalks him, there is a right to the body, then a left. Canelo rips another good to the body. The Jab-jab-body hit combo scores for Canelo. Golovkin starts to throw the right hand. Canelo with a good nod. Golovkin hits him with a jab. Left hook from Canelo, then a body shot that knocks an off-balance Golovkin back a few steps. Good scores for Canelo. The champ pulls away at the end of a tighter round.

Round 6: Canelo with a jab to open Round 6 and he spins Golovkin. As Golovkin tries to force his way through, Canelo hits him to the body and lands a short hook. Golovkin with a 1-2. He interrupts Canelo with a jab. Canelo rips the body. A small part of Golovkin’s attack goes through before he hits an uppercut. Another hard left to the body lands for Canelo.

Round 7: Canelo scores with his left hand and avoids a few counters from Golovkin. Canelo’s right cross leads to a clinch. The left hook scores for Canelo. Uppercut by Canelo. He’s chasing her and Golovkin isn’t putting much into it. It stings Canelo’s body. Canelo hits Golovkin with a right hand. He keeps a steady jab that Golovkin can’t figure out.

Round 8: There’s Golovkin’s jab, but we haven’t seen much more than that yet. Canelo with another left hook as they circle. He throws another left which lands. Canelo wins an exchange of lefts. He takes his left towards the body of Golovkin. Jab-jab-body combo lands for Canelo. Golovkin shows signs of life, but Canelo immediately backs him up with a counter. Right hand scores for Golovkin.

Round 9: Canelo triples on the jab, then follows with a left and a right. Uppercut to the body by Canelo. Good scores for Canelo. Canelo still beats Golovkin to the punch. Golovkin with a jab and he finally lets in some power shots as Canelo goes defensive. Canelo doubles on a jab. Golovkin lands a right. Left hand from Golovkin, then straight to the right. Canelo responds with two clean punches. Canelo hits the body.

Round 10: Golovkin is definitely looser after finally winning a round. Direct scores on the left for Golovkin. Canelo mixing it up to the head and body, he lands an uppercut. Hard body downed by Canelo. Uppercut by Golovkin. Canelo with a counter on the left. Both fighters look to establish their jab. Short punch inside for Canelo.

Round 11: There is a cut over Canelo’s eye from an accidental headbutt. Golovkin just fired that job there now. Canelo counters with body work and goes headhunting with his uppercut. Canelo snuck that left around Golovkin’s guard. Golovkin stays busy with his jab. Golovkin to the body. He needs a knockout if he wants to get that elusive victory over Canelo, though.

Round 12: Canelo stepping forward with his flying left hook. Golovkin narrowly misses with an uppercut. They get sloppy with their clinch work. Golovkin blasts Canelo with a jab. Much more grappling than boxing in this round. Left uppercut for Canelo. Golovkin clinches a 1-2 down the middle. Good left to the body for Canelo. They exchange a few punches before the bell then kiss.

Official result: Canelo Alvarez defeated. Gennadiy Golovkin via unanimous decision (116-112, 115-113, 115-113)

After the fight, Canelo thanks Golovkin for the trilogy. “We gave the fans three good fights. Thank you for everything.”

Canelo adds that he plans to have surgery on his left hand after the fight.

“Everyone knows this is a top class for boxing,” Golovkin said after the fight. “Everyone knows it’s Canelo. You miss a punch, he can finish the fight. Look at his face, look at my face. We trained well and it shows we had a really good fight thanks to that.

“Today Canelo is better,” added Golovkin.

Golvkin agrees the beef between him and Canelo is “100%” and compares them to LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

They shake hands and kiss afterwards.

Canelo is asked about a rematch with Dmitry Bivol and says it’s a fight he wants, but “I need a rest”. Bivol defeated Canelo last May and he is defending the WBA light heavyweight title against Gilberto Ramirez on November 5.
