Total Combat

The increasingly colorful Shawn Bias took on Chance Ferrar at 145 in the Headline bout at Total Combat 15. Farrar scored first landing a punch then taking down bias with a textbook double. Bias unfazed calmly swept Ferrar and after a brief scuffle both fighters were on there feet. After another grappling exchange Ferrar was able to take down Bias again but once again Bias showed his superior Jiu Jitsu by armbarring Ferrar at 2:59 in the first. Bias Celebrated by hugging the after fight interviewer and running on the cage fence.

In other exciting Total Combat action Dominik Cruz was able to eek a Descion over Dave Hisquierdo. After being taken down repeatedly in the first round Cruz proved he had the bigger tank of gas and the better hands. Hisquierdo won the fight in the third when he repeatedly engaged Cruz with punches but Cruz’s response was to hit the mat. Cruz (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

Wade Shipp showed his submission skills in his win over Allen Sullivan. In the first Wade was surprisingly easily taken down by the much smaller Allen who barely made out of the round when Shipp was unable to finish a triangle before the bell sounded. In the second Shipp took his frustration out on Sullivan by easily throwing him to the mat taking his back and sinking the choke at 2:41 in the 2nd.

MMA-Fighters KO of the night goes to the 14 second KO of Josh Tampsen by Tony Velarde. Valerde only threw one punch in the fight.

Total Combat 14 rocked the Del Mar Fairgrounds once again in their 2nd Southern California appearance. The event that mainly features local fighters this time featured one of the biggest names at 155, UFC Veteran Hermes Franca. Franca was originally set to take on Total Combats Lightweight champion Adam Lynn but, Lynn was forced to step down a few weeks before the show due to injury. In stepped Total Combat Veteran Toby Imada. Imada isn’t new to top level competition, he has fought a who’s who of mma including fights with Rumble on the Rock 175 tourney champion Jake Shields, UFC vet Jason “Mayhem” Miller, and The Ultimate fighter Season 2 winner Joe Stevenson.

Hermes took no time in initiating the action getting the takedown after throwing a high kick. Hermes quickly passed Imada’s guard and moved to knee on chest. Toby then was able to stand up and get a takedown of his own before taking any damage from Franca. This is where it all went wrong for Imada. Imada stood up in the guard landing a solid punch to Franca who swiftly slapped on an armbar. Toby countered by standing but was quickly swept by Franca who got the easy tap from top. Franca Over Imada by Tapout Armbar at 53 seconds into the first round.

Girl Fight Makes History.

Hands down fight of the night was the heavily anticipated match up of Crystal Harris vs Kellyn Huehn. The girls made a bit of California MMA history as being the first girls to fight in a state sanctioned match. The girls started the fight off with a bang slugging it out in the first minute of the 3 minute round. This fight would turn out to be a classic grappler vs striker match up with Harris taking the stand up and Huehn dominating the ground game. It seemed that Huehn was dominating the fight over Harris latching on 2 armbar attempts and treating Harris to an extended stay on the bottom of her full mount But, alas it was the damage that Harris did standing that won her the fight giving her the majority Decision.

Total Combat 13

Thru the smell of grilled onions on bratwurst Current Total Combat 185 Champion Art “Pahuco” Santore battled UFC vet Edwin “Baby Face” Dewees. Dewees came out striking and was able to get Santore to the mat and move to full mount. From Mount Dewees fired down punches that hurt Santore forcing him to give up his back. Showing great heart Santore was able to fight off a rear naked choke attempt and move into Edwin’s guard. After some inactivity Herb Dean stood the fighters up and they began exchanging blows. Backed into a corner Dewees shot for a double and Santore sprawled but made the mistake of kneeing Dewees while one of his hands was still on the ground. Being the most polite fighter in MMA Santore quickly apologized to Joe Riggs, in Dewees Corner, and kissed Dean on the cheek for deducting a point off his score card.

After losing the first round 8-10 the Team Quest fighter knew he had to take the second round so he came out looking to finish. Santore threw a barrage of punches at Dewees putting him down with a right hook and finishing him on the ground by landing 4 to 5 unblocked punches to Dewees head. Herb Dean saw enough and quickly halted the fight at 14 seconds gone by in the second round. Dewees quickly popped up after the fight was stopped causing some boos from the crowd. “He didn’t defend against the punches. He (Santore) landed about 5 punches and Edwin did nothing to defend them… Move you hips move a leg do something and I will let you continue to fight but he did nothing I had to stop it” stated Dean after the fight. “Then Art feeds me to the lions saying that he wouldn’t have stopped the fight so soon. (in the post fight interview) I would have said I was throwing with bad intentions and landing devastating blows… Edwin is lucky Herb stopped the fight…” Art Santore over Edwin Dewees by TKO at 0:14 in the second. Santore retains the 185 belt.

Sanchez shows heart.

Total Combat 13Eddie “Dirty” Sanchez showed that he is the toughest Heavyweight in the Total Combat organization by outlasting UFC vet Wade “Nightmare” Shipp. Shipp looked to be on the verge of knocking Sanchez out at any moment even landing 2 huge high kicks that both sent Dirty tumbling to the mat. With Shipp ahead on the cards in the 3rd , Sanchez at about a quarter tank and Shipp with his warning light on, Eddie took one of the previously mentioned high kicks sending him to the mat. Some how Sanchez recovered and took the giant to the ground landing in side mount. On the ground Sanchez was able to land several punches on an unresponsive ship forcing the ref to call the fight. Eddie Sanchez over Wade Shipp TKO at 4:23 in the 3rd.

Swanson avenges loss.

In other action King of the Cage standout Cub Swanson took on local favorite Shannon Gugerty. Swanson, looking to avenge his only MMA loss, dominated Gugerty on the ground and standing in the first. Halfway thru the second with Gugerty hurt from Cubs constant ground and pound barrage he is able to move from side control to full mount with one of Shannons arms trapped. Cub makes quick work of his wounded foe with punches forcing the ref to stop the fight. Cub Swanson over Shannon Gugherty at 3:40 in the second.

Total Combat 13Jessie Moreng outlasted Chris David in a slugfest that had both fighters hurt in the first. After another exciting round in the second David left nothing for the 3rd and Moreng was able to get the dec by taking Davids back for most of the final round. Jesse Moreng over Chris David Decision (Unanimous) at 5:00 3rd.

Patrick Speight over James Wilks by Decision (Unanimous) at 3:00 in the 3rd.

Robert Emerson out wrestled the wrestler in his match with Jamie Schmitt. Emerson who could be a top 10 155er came out to fight and threw around a very tough Schmitt. Emerson just out classed Schmitt finishing him with strikes standing in Jamie’s guard.

After Emerson was pulled off a dazed Schmitt he layed on the ground in his best all American girl pose smiling to a booing crowd. After he got up he proceeded to the cage near his corner climbed the fence and jumped out. This quickly prompted a California State Athletic Commission official over to him.

Offical - “Young man what is the frist thing we tell you in the rules meeting… not to climb on the fence…”

Emerson - “Well do you want me to Climb back over or should I go around to the door?”

Offical - “Are you being Funny? Why don’t you come over to the table so I can fine you a 100 dollars.”

After the official walked away Emerson began walking back to the dressing rooms but was convinced by his corner and a Total Combat employee that he must go talk to the official. Robert Emerson over Jamie Schmitt by TKO at 1:02 in round 2nd.

Alex Garcia over Ryan Smith Decision (Unanimous) 3rd round

Bill Dean over Tony Velarde by TKO (Cut) at 1:00 in the first.

Luke Hodges over Marcus Dawson by TKO at 0:32 in the second.

The Golden Acorn Casino October 15 2005 Campo, California

Total Combat 10It took Brad Doerges (webmaster), Dave Mandel (photos), and myself (writer) seemingly four hours to get to Campo, California. I had no idea where Campo was, Brad told us it was in San Diego. He lied; it was over 40 minutes outside San Diego. I wonder if Sherdog lies to his staff as well? Or does he chauffer them in a giant RV? Luckily for Brad the Golden Acorn Casino, although seemingly in the middle of no where, was easy to find.

The first fight was underway and I was already amazed. Total Combat Dolls were spread out all over the arena (a giant tent) dancing to their own rhythm. They all looked to be dressed in Halloween costumes and showing enough skin to easily distract me during a fight. Luckily they were whisked away during the fight and somehow reappeared right after a fight. They even did an intermission show between the fights that showed they were more than good looks. I was also impressed by the production value of this show, seems like you don’t have to be the UFC to have good shows in the US.

It was a battle of local yokels all night as Grant ‘Windstorm’ Whitmer accompanied by Dean Lister and Melchor Menor representing Lister Training Center took on Crazy Ryan from SD Fight Club who was accompanied by Charlie Kohler.

It was an up and down battle for 3 hard fought rounds. It was the only fight to go to the decision. I had Crazy Ryan drawing with Windstorm. The webmaster had the same scorecard as I did. Windstorm ended up taking the decision as Ryan was deducted a point in the second round for an illegal knee to an opponent who is on all fours. Ryan had Windstorm finished a few times but Storm hung on strong and weathered Ryan’s storm and was able to win with head and arm takedowns and effective positioning.

Daniel Torres from IV Combat Grappling fought Ruben Vera from Ma Du Entertainment. Vera, who was cornered by up and comer Nam Phan, was powered by Pho’ that night as he got the takedown and finished the RNC moments into the first round. He had to be the skinniest fighter I have ever seen, but boy was he a man.

Total Combat 10Next Cody Culkin of Pro-Pain fought Brett Cooper from Sub-Fighter. Will we someday see MMA-Fighter vs Sub-Fighter? Anyways it took Cooper a minute and a half to TKO his way to a victory over Culkin.

Corn “Rezdog” Zwicker from Team Magnitude (who had the loudest pop from the audience) had an impressive showing against Tom Hubert of Black Tiger Dojo. He rushed in like a man on fire unloading punches and vicious GNP. All Hubert could do was hang on, bloodied up until round two. Round two was underway as it was more of the same, there was a nice armbar attempt by Hubert who in my opinion was not T-Boned enough to finish that armbar and Zwicker easily jumped over him and passed to sidemount. From there he ended up in north south position. A position he seemed to have never seen before, where Brad and I were screaming at the top of our lungs to finish with a Kimura which he had perfect position of doing considering he had the guys head and arm tried up in a reverse triangle. Confused and after asking the referee what he should do, he Mongolian chopped his way to a doctor’s stoppage.

Brent Stuchlick of Lister Training fought Eber Saulido. This was the most stand up action we saw all night as Stuchlick TKO’ed Saulido early in the first round.

Patrick Speight of SD Fight Club took on Brandon Adams of Magnitude. Speight was too much as he out struck out position Adams gaining mount in the first and then again in the second round, pounding away until the referee called a stop to the contest. Basically in this event, every person who was mounted lost. Either they got TKO’ed or gave up their backs to a RNC. No one ever heard of shrimping? A little jiu jitsu anyone? Helio would roll over in his grave if he were dead…

Total Combat 10Chris Davis of Black Tiger took on Daniel Vasquez of 5150 Fight Club. Davis came out dancing like he was Travolta with his pants on fire. He went in the ring, threw a few punches, caught a flying knee in mid air and countered with a big slam, got reversed, did a textbook armbar for the submission victory then Saturday Night Fevered his way out of the ring.

Josh Griggs of Team Quam rear naked choked Ulysses Cortez of IV Combat Grappling in the first round. Mount, punch, give up back, RNC, tap, tap, tap, rinse, and repeat.

Brandon Magna of SD Fight Club (the event is almost team vs. team) fought Jared Rollins of No Limits. Magna seemed to be getting the better of Rollins early in the first round, but Rollins was much less fatigued as he kept coming on strong in the end of round 1 eventually opening up a big cut with an elbow from the bottom. In round 2, in a big flurry where Magna ended up on the ground either falling down to a punch or exhaustion, Rollins followed up with a knee and was disqualified for kneeing a downed opponent. To me it seemed like the knee was good because Magna was getting up and only had one hand on the floor and was no longer on his knees. The referee saw otherwise. Legendary trainer Colin Oyama was not pleased as he unleashed a flurry of verbal NHB on the referee.

Tim Carey of American Freestyle submits Toby Imada of 228 Gym in the first round with a RNC. Imada was in way over his head.

Alex Garcia of City Boxing followed to the ring by up and coming UFC fighter Brandon Vera took on Jeff Harwell of KO Fitness. It ended as quickly as it started as Garcia grabbed a hold of Harwell and KO’ed the KO Fitness fighter with suplex.

Total Combat 10Julian Rush of Fight Science took on Eddie “Dirty” Sanchez of Team Magnitude. It was a slobber knocker as both men traded bombs that mostly missed. They tired quickly as the first round came to a close as they desperately tried to finish each other, trying to avoid the second round. Sanchez could be seen telling his corner that he was tired and he wanted no more, but his corner kept him in the fight. In the other corner Rush was not able to answer the bell, as he seemed more tired than even Sanchez and had to lie on the ring floor for a good five minutes. He did not look to be in great fight shape, as society may deem him overweight. I like to call the gut, a fuel tank; a fuel tank that burns gas fast.

Jeremy Jackson of Team Freedom took on Christian Vargas in the main event. Early on Vargas caught Jackson with a high kick and dropped Jackson. Jackson kept his cool and clinched with Vargas, getting the takedown and trying to work the ground and pound. He eventually got reversed and tried some submissions from the bottom. Both men got back to their feet and to my surprise; it was Jackson going for the takedown again. He got it with an inside trip and eventually got mount, Vargas gave up his back and tried to stand as Jackson did the inevitable and cinched in the choke for the victory with some improved ground skills.
