TFA 6 Review Toby Grear shows why he has the Heart of Lion. – By Brad Doerges
4/28/2007

In MMA-Fighter.com’s fight of the night Toby ”Lion Heart” Grear truely showed the Heart of the Lion in his 3 round decision over Brett Cooper. Although Grear won the fight Cooper gave him all he had latching on several armbars from guard forcing the Eddie Bravo trained fighter to slam his way out. Grear lost the battle on the feet, Cooper took Grear down at will, but unexpectedly won the battle on the ground repeatedly sweeping his opponent then working his ground and pound. The Greer friendly crowd cheered as visibly exhausted Greer had the TFA 155lb belt put on by his girlfriend “Roxy Balboa” Richardson. Greer Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
In other Title Fight action Julian Rush (225) took on Greg White(240) for the TFA Heavyweight belt. White took the first round by taking Rush down and dominating the fight from the top. The tables turned for White in the second as he found himself eating punches from the bottom after Rush was able to sweep from half guard. White covered up and Ref was forced to stop the fight at 2:23 in the second. White TKO 2:23 Rd 2.
TFA bantamweight (135) champion Chad George took on Todd Guimond in a rubbermatch. This bout was setup to have a clear and decisive winner of the series but did nothing more than cause more controversy.
During the first 2 rounds Guimond and George battled on the ground with Guimond getting the edge before the controversy began. In the 3rd once again Guimond controlled the action and looked to have locked in a choke from sidemount. Referee Cecil Peoples immediately jumped in and began issuing commands to George who did not respond forcing him to stop the fight. After the choke was released George bounced back up and began complaining to Peoples as the partisan crowed booed. A 4th match has been set up between the 2 fighters for TFA’s next show. Guimond RD 3 Submission Choke (1:31).

Jesse Juarez easily defeated overmatched Jacob Nude hanging on to the TFA Welterweight belt. Early in the first Jarez picked Nudel up held him over his head then slammed him down to the mat. From there Jarez gained mount and quickly armbared his dazed opponent. Juarez Submission (Armbar) at 1:02 in RD 1
Undercard Bouts
Seth Dukin and Jeff Martin opened the event with a ground and stand up war resulting in a well deserved Dukin victory. Dukin by Decision (Unanimous) at 3:00 in RD 3
Although Eddie Bravo looked on from Gilbert Salinas corner he was no match for Conor Heun who quickly took Salinas down and secured the Brabo Choke. Heun Submission (Brabo Choke) at 1:37 in RD 1.

TFA pulled off another great event at the Carson Center. The standing room only crowd was packed with well known fighters; Mike Guymon, Karo Parisyan, Eddie Bravo, Joe Camacho, and Erik Apple.
The first fight was the nights quickest fight when Jeff Martin was able to get a sweep to full mount and finish Camilo Rivera with strikes. Craig Pickerill suffered the same fate as he was quickly taken out by Raja Shippen from Jokers Wild in the third fight.
MMA-Fighter.com’s knock out of the night went to Mitch Mellotti, who after losing a close first round to crowd favorite Cordero, dominated the second round with his stand up eventually taking the fight with a devastating high kick with 7 seconds left.
Although Martin Bautista was unable to defend his title he still fought 5 rounds in his match against Gilbert Salinas. Bautista showed incredibly improved cardio finishing each round strong and the 5th with a flurry from Salinas’ guard that won him a unanimous descion.
Todd Guimond put his undefeated record on the line against crowd favorite Chad “Savage” George. Guimond wasted little time taking down Savage and moving to side mount. Although Savage was able to get back up Guimonds superior grappling eventually led him to Chad’s back where he was able to quickly finish the fight with a rear naked choke. Guimond is the first TFA 135lb Champion.

Total Fighting Alliance 2 Review

Hoping to build off the momentum started by the legalization of MMA in California Total Fighting Alliance held its 2nd event in the heart of the south bay, Carson. Carson Community Center was packed with fight fans ready to see there favorite local fighters bang it out in the cage. All fights were 3 rounds and 3 minutes long.
Main Event
The main event featured Undefeated (5-0) Jimmy Smith from Aloisio Silva BJJ and Pochen Wang from Asian Invasion. Although I knew nothing of Pochen I had seen Smith fight in King of the Cage, quickly dispatching Vince Gooseman by Armbar in the first round. The first round started with Smith pressing the action with his superior standup, charging in with punching combos then clinching with Pochen. Pochen easily got double unders and took Smith down. Smith effectively neutralized Pochen’s ground and pound attempts and the fight got stood up due to inactivity. This would set the tone for the fight with Pochen backing away from Smith’s flurries and Pochen winning the battle in the clinch. Pochen would either get the takedown or would break from Smith landing a right punch or elbow on the way out. In the third round it looked as though Pochens luck had run out. Pochen ,once again backing away from Smith’s combinations, got caught on the chin with a right cross that hurt the Asian Invasion fighter. Pochen once again was able to get the clinch then the takedown where Pochen would score with a few hammer fists from half guard before Smith could get to full guard. The fight ended with Smith taunting Pochen trying to get him to engage standing but was unsuccessful. Smith loses a tough split Dec to Pochen (28-29 29-28 28-29). Pochen Wang By Judge Decsion at 3:00 in round 3.
Nelson out lasts Sanchez.
Total Fighting Alliance 2 ReviewIn more exciting TFA action Aric Nelson from Bomb Squad took on Armando Sanchez from Joe Camacho BJJ. Nelson came out sporting a Chuckesq Mohawk and scowl that would scare a hells angel (if he wasn’t 155). I figured Mondo the BJJ specialist would be able to control the fight by taking the fight to the ground but Nelson would prove me wrong. In the first Sanchez charged in on Nelson getting him against the fence and easily taking him down. Sanchez got to half guard and began to work his ground and pound but Nelson was able to reverse this position using fence. Nelson gained half guard and began hammering down on the Camacho trained fighter. Nelson would do more of the same in the second fighting off a triangle choke and then pounding on Sanchez from his guard. In the third Sanchez seemed to have nothing left after an early single leg attempt giving up half guard. Sanchez curled up while Nelson landed uncontested elbows to Sanchez’s head and body forcing the ref to stop the fight. Nelson by Ref stoppage (elbows) at 1:22 in round 3
In conclusion another great night of fights for TFA minus the half time show and Daniel Barizia’s blood on my shirt. It was announced that Sean “The Destroyer” Loeffler will be fighting for the 185lb belt at the next TFA. For more info check out TotalFighting.net.
