At the LA Forum 03/17/2007: it was a night of 12 fights. 2 alternate fights headlined by LA’s Anacondas vs San Jose Razorclaws and Southern California Condors vs Tokyo Sabres.

Important note is Bas Rutten stepped down as head coach of the Anacondas and Shawn Tompkins took over which I believe is a better move and he has Sergio Penha as his assistant coach. For those who don’t know, Sergio Penha is BJJ god. Also Ken Yasuda is the head coach of the Tokyo Sabres. Ken has never been a fighter and has only competed in body building and his team only has 1 Japanese fighter and they are not based out of Tokyo either. I am not completely sold on the team concept either and still feels just like a gimmick because fighters are not based out of cities they represent, they don’t all train together, their team coach is not their main coaches in real life, and a lot of times the head coaches don’t even know much about MMA or cannot communicate in the same language as their fighter and an assistant coach ends up doing most of the work. But I digress…

Alternate Bouts
Conor Heun Def. Clint Coronel by Dec. (Split) R3

Heun controlled all of round 1 and took Coronel’s back. Round 2 saw a more tired Heun and took a lot of punches from Coronel. Heun still shot in with the takedowns and was the aggressor. Rd 3 saw Coronel open up more on a depleted Heun. I felt it was 2 rds to 1 for Coronel but only Cecil Peoples agreed with me.

Zach George Def. Danny Suarez Decision (Unanimous) R3

Suarez pulled guard a few times and had George in some serious problems defending chokes and armbars, but overall George controlled the fight with effective striking and take down defense. It was almost a mma striking demo sometimes with punches, body shots, low kicks, and spinning back fists.

Razorclaws vs. Anacondas

Brian Ebersole vs. Alex Schoenauer
Round 1
Ebersole has a crazy look, he looks like Heath Herring and his chest hair is shaved into a happy face. He also attempted a cartwheel kick at the opening of the round, which Shoenauer used to take him down, Ebersole reveresed and Shoenauer went for a toe hold. Stand up and Shoenaur is unloading on Ebersole which Ebersole laughs at until he is dropped by a Shoenaur punch.

Round 2
Saw Ebersole take Shoenaur down and use ground and pound and some shoulder punches to control the round.

Round 3
Some good exchanges with Alex as the aggressor once again but a lot of the clean shots are landed by Ebersole. Takedown by Ebersole, Ebersole is caught in a guillotine, he fakes a tap and confuses the crowd and the officials but the ref is on top of it and the fight continues, Ebersole escapes and finishes the round with some ground and pound.

Alex Schoenauer defeats Brian Ebersole by split decision (29-28, 29-28 and 28-29).

Brian Foster vs. Benji Radach

Radach rushes in with punches and gets a takedown. Foster tries to stand up but gets caught in a guillotine and is choked unconscious in the first round.

Josh Odom vs. Chris Horodecki

Horodecki is only 19 years old, but he is an animal with an unlimited gas tank. Odom had no answer for Horodecki’s relentless offense of strikes and takedown defenses. Horodecki never stopped punching or kicking or striking, just nonstop and won a unanimous decision.

Donnie Liles vs. Jay Hieron

Hieron takes Liles to the ground, Liles is able to reverse but ends up in a deep guillotine and is forced to tap in the first round.

Dan Christison vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
Round 1
Soszynski controlled the ring and was able to land the cleaner punches and take down Christison at will.

Round 2
Some good exchanges, Soszynski takes Christison down again but Christison gets back to his feet and takes Soszynski down and ends up taking his back and falls out to an armbar which Soszynski defends and escapes and throws bombs til the end of the round.

Round 3
Soszynski is now imposing his will on the exchanges, takes Christison down again but gets caught in a deep armbar. Soszynski shows his strength by lifting Christison up and slamming him on his head to escape and throws bombs til the end. Unanimous Decision

The Anacondas sweep the Razorclaws, 5-0.

Sabres vs. Condors

Savant Young vs. Adam Lynn
Round 1
Savant controls the stand up and gets taken down by Lynn and controlled until the end.

Round 2
Young drops and ends Lynn with a punch just 21 seconds into the round.

Antonio McKee vs. Rodrigo Ruas

Antonio McKee takes all three rounds and wins in typical McKee fashion with takedowns, ground control, and some decent lay and pray. Ruas scored with some good low kicks but was not enough to stop the takedown machine. Unanimous decision McKee.

Kazuhiro Hamanaka vs. Jeremy Williams

Beautiful jiu jitsu demonstration by Williams as he gets taken down by Hamanaka only to secure a triangle and choke Hamanaka unconscious in the first round.

Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Justin Levens

The Janitor is too much for the Executioner as he maules Levens and takes him down, takes his back, mounts him, and unloads with punches through out until the ref jumps in to stop the fight.

Wayne Cole vs. Antoine Jaoude
Round 1
Cole controls round 1 with a takedown and stiff punches from the guard.

Round 2
Cole is able to land more punches and harder punches, Jaoude answers back with some low kicks and catches Cole with a straight right for the KO come from behind victory.

The Tokyo Sabres win the team battle 3 to 2.

November 17, 2006 – Pro Sub League, the people who brought you LA Sub X have put together another installment, this time labeled X-Mission. Held in Culver City, California in a packed house seating over a thousand fans and many B level celebrities, would witness the return of Randy Couture to some form of competition.

There was a lot of hitches, like the first show, this show was also 2 hours behind and there was no organization as trying to get people in or managing the lines. It was put together by grapplers though so what can we expect? Luckily the fights went by fast and continuously.

The rules were a little different. 1 pt for a takedown, 1 pt for mount or back mount, and 3 pts for near submissions or catches. 2 4 minute rounds and 2 1 minute overtimes. In the end no matter what the rules are, the good players always seem to come out on top.

The first match of the night was Mac Danzig (KOTC Champion) vs Alan Zborovsky. I heard a lot about Mac before this fight and was waiting to see if he would live up to his hype which he did. Alan did a good job taking Mac down and passing his guard, but Mac had great guard work, surprisingly from an MMA fighter who is not known for his jiu jitsu. Mac forces a scramble and overwhelms Alan and applies a deep kimura for catch pts. Alan hangs tough and escapes only to be caught in a north south choke and the referee had to stop because Alan was clearly out. Mac wins by choke.

The second match was black belt Jeff Glover of Paragon and Cobra Kai Jiu Jitsu vs Shane Rice who is a brown under Rickson Gracie. Glover had beaten Shane twice in previous matches and this was supposed to be Shane’s revenge match, with Rickson himself in his corner. Jeff is relaxed and doesn’t seem to exert himself at all, or explode into moves, instead flowing from move to move and using his great flexibility. Glover attempts to jump guard but fails to earn any pts, he goes for triangles from the bottom but not tight enough to secure any points. Jeff secures a single and switches beautifully into a kneebar to earn 3 pts. In the second round, its Jeff working from his guard and Shane is not able to come close to any catches. Jeff wins 3-0.

The third match pitted Rafael Luvato Jr. vs Roberto Camargo. Rafael is well known for his gi game, but in his 2nd or possibly third fight with Camargo he had the most one sided fight of the night. It was competitive but he came through with a takedown, a guillotine attempt and an armbar attempt that put him up 7-0 giving Rafael Luvato Jr. the win.

The fourth match was last minute replacement Andy Wang vs Kron Gracie who is the son of Rickson Gracie. There were rumors that Andy was already defeated mentally. It wasn’t a lopsided affair as Kron did secure a takedown and a straight ankle lock attempt for 4 pts, which Andy protested. Later in the fight Andy was able to secure the top position and pass Kron’s guard and land in sidemount and momentarily in mount, but guard pass and sidemount do not earn any pts and the mount was not held long enough. Kron wins 4-0.

Replacement Alberto Crane (Mundial Champ) took on even more last minute replacement Joe Camacho. Crane dropped to his signature half guard and from there swept Joe and attempted a guard pass to a D’Arce/Danagher choke which Joe was able to survive and eventually fight out of. In the second round Crane quickly took Joe down, mounted him and then text book armbarred him for the submission win. Crane by armbar.

Vladimir Matyushenko and Vinicius Magalhaes had the worst match of the night, both warned for stalling with Vladdy winning by 1 pt after 2 rds by a takedown. Vinicius did try to engage and Vladdy used his wrestling to keep Vinicius at bay and basically stall. Most unimpressive. Vladdy by 1 pt.

The co-main event of the night was Jake Shields (Shooto Champ) vs Marcello Garcia (ADCC Champ, Mundial Champ). Jake was the much bigger fighter but Garcia was game. Marcello jumps to guard, Jake passes to a half guard and Garcia uses the half guard to transition to a single leg takedown and take Jake down. Marcello applies a guillotine from the top and after a brief scramble, Jake had to tap. Marcello by guillotine choke.

The main event Randy Couture vs Jacare. Everyone was expecting Jacare to destroy Randy but Randy once again proved everyone wrong. Jacare engaged early and tried a single leg but realized he was not going to take the much bigger Randy down. Randy had a huge size and strength advantage over Jacare. Jacare worked his guard and tried for armbars and triangles but none of them earned him any pts which made Wallid Ismael scream at the refs. Jacare seemed to realize that Randy was too strong to submit upper body wise and Jacare switched to kneebar attempts, the last one being close until the rd ended.

In the second round its more of the same with Jacare attempting knee bars and Randy actually trying to take Jacare’s back. The fight ends 0-0. First over time, nothing happens. Second overtime the two grapplers engage but neither is able to do anything to the other fighter. The fight ends as a competitive draw. Randy was too experienced and strong for Jacare to overcome like everyone imagined.

Until the next Pro Sub League

The Golden Acorn Casino October 15 2005 Campo, California

Total Combat 10It took Brad Doerges (webmaster), Dave Mandel (photos), and myself (writer) seemingly four hours to get to Campo, California. I had no idea where Campo was, Brad told us it was in San Diego. He lied; it was over 40 minutes outside San Diego. I wonder if Sherdog lies to his staff as well? Or does he chauffer them in a giant RV? Luckily for Brad the Golden Acorn Casino, although seemingly in the middle of no where, was easy to find.

The first fight was underway and I was already amazed. Total Combat Dolls were spread out all over the arena (a giant tent) dancing to their own rhythm. They all looked to be dressed in Halloween costumes and showing enough skin to easily distract me during a fight. Luckily they were whisked away during the fight and somehow reappeared right after a fight. They even did an intermission show between the fights that showed they were more than good looks. I was also impressed by the production value of this show, seems like you don’t have to be the UFC to have good shows in the US.

It was a battle of local yokels all night as Grant ‘Windstorm’ Whitmer accompanied by Dean Lister and Melchor Menor representing Lister Training Center took on Crazy Ryan from SD Fight Club who was accompanied by Charlie Kohler.

It was an up and down battle for 3 hard fought rounds. It was the only fight to go to the decision. I had Crazy Ryan drawing with Windstorm. The webmaster had the same scorecard as I did. Windstorm ended up taking the decision as Ryan was deducted a point in the second round for an illegal knee to an opponent who is on all fours. Ryan had Windstorm finished a few times but Storm hung on strong and weathered Ryan’s storm and was able to win with head and arm takedowns and effective positioning.

Daniel Torres from IV Combat Grappling fought Ruben Vera from Ma Du Entertainment. Vera, who was cornered by up and comer Nam Phan, was powered by Pho’ that night as he got the takedown and finished the RNC moments into the first round. He had to be the skinniest fighter I have ever seen, but boy was he a man.

Total Combat 10Next Cody Culkin of Pro-Pain fought Brett Cooper from Sub-Fighter. Will we someday see MMA-Fighter vs Sub-Fighter? Anyways it took Cooper a minute and a half to TKO his way to a victory over Culkin.

Corn “Rezdog” Zwicker from Team Magnitude (who had the loudest pop from the audience) had an impressive showing against Tom Hubert of Black Tiger Dojo. He rushed in like a man on fire unloading punches and vicious GNP. All Hubert could do was hang on, bloodied up until round two. Round two was underway as it was more of the same, there was a nice armbar attempt by Hubert who in my opinion was not T-Boned enough to finish that armbar and Zwicker easily jumped over him and passed to sidemount. From there he ended up in north south position. A position he seemed to have never seen before, where Brad and I were screaming at the top of our lungs to finish with a Kimura which he had perfect position of doing considering he had the guys head and arm tried up in a reverse triangle. Confused and after asking the referee what he should do, he Mongolian chopped his way to a doctor’s stoppage.

Brent Stuchlick of Lister Training fought Eber Saulido. This was the most stand up action we saw all night as Stuchlick TKO’ed Saulido early in the first round.

Patrick Speight of SD Fight Club took on Brandon Adams of Magnitude. Speight was too much as he out struck out position Adams gaining mount in the first and then again in the second round, pounding away until the referee called a stop to the contest. Basically in this event, every person who was mounted lost. Either they got TKO’ed or gave up their backs to a RNC. No one ever heard of shrimping? A little jiu jitsu anyone? Helio would roll over in his grave if he were dead…

Total Combat 10Chris Davis of Black Tiger took on Daniel Vasquez of 5150 Fight Club. Davis came out dancing like he was Travolta with his pants on fire. He went in the ring, threw a few punches, caught a flying knee in mid air and countered with a big slam, got reversed, did a textbook armbar for the submission victory then Saturday Night Fevered his way out of the ring.

Josh Griggs of Team Quam rear naked choked Ulysses Cortez of IV Combat Grappling in the first round. Mount, punch, give up back, RNC, tap, tap, tap, rinse, and repeat.

Brandon Magna of SD Fight Club (the event is almost team vs. team) fought Jared Rollins of No Limits. Magna seemed to be getting the better of Rollins early in the first round, but Rollins was much less fatigued as he kept coming on strong in the end of round 1 eventually opening up a big cut with an elbow from the bottom. In round 2, in a big flurry where Magna ended up on the ground either falling down to a punch or exhaustion, Rollins followed up with a knee and was disqualified for kneeing a downed opponent. To me it seemed like the knee was good because Magna was getting up and only had one hand on the floor and was no longer on his knees. The referee saw otherwise. Legendary trainer Colin Oyama was not pleased as he unleashed a flurry of verbal NHB on the referee.

Tim Carey of American Freestyle submits Toby Imada of 228 Gym in the first round with a RNC. Imada was in way over his head.

Alex Garcia of City Boxing followed to the ring by up and coming UFC fighter Brandon Vera took on Jeff Harwell of KO Fitness. It ended as quickly as it started as Garcia grabbed a hold of Harwell and KO’ed the KO Fitness fighter with suplex.

Total Combat 10Julian Rush of Fight Science took on Eddie “Dirty” Sanchez of Team Magnitude. It was a slobber knocker as both men traded bombs that mostly missed. They tired quickly as the first round came to a close as they desperately tried to finish each other, trying to avoid the second round. Sanchez could be seen telling his corner that he was tired and he wanted no more, but his corner kept him in the fight. In the other corner Rush was not able to answer the bell, as he seemed more tired than even Sanchez and had to lie on the ring floor for a good five minutes. He did not look to be in great fight shape, as society may deem him overweight. I like to call the gut, a fuel tank; a fuel tank that burns gas fast.

Jeremy Jackson of Team Freedom took on Christian Vargas in the main event. Early on Vargas caught Jackson with a high kick and dropped Jackson. Jackson kept his cool and clinched with Vargas, getting the takedown and trying to work the ground and pound. He eventually got reversed and tried some submissions from the bottom. Both men got back to their feet and to my surprise; it was Jackson going for the takedown again. He got it with an inside trip and eventually got mount, Vargas gave up his back and tried to stand as Jackson did the inevitable and cinched in the choke for the victory with some improved ground skills.

I was fortunate enough to have a fighter in the next UFC and new UFC young gun to sit down with me and give me an interview. He’s welll known in California for his grappling and fighting prowess but the rest of the world does not know his name yet but they soon will. He comes from a legendary school called Hayastan and from legendary teachers named Gokor and Gene and everyone is curious to know is everything regarding that school’s exceptional ability truth or myth. Just being given the chance to fight in the UFC says a lot about the school and this fighter…
What is you full name for those of us who cannot spell it?

Karo Parisyan

Who will you be fighting in UFC 44?

David Strasser
How did you get approached for this fight?

Joe Silva (UFC matchmaker) called me and Gokor about a fight sometime after my fight against Fernando Vasconcelos for King of the Cage.
What is your background and how long have you been training?

My background is judo and grappling under Gokor Chivichyan and Gene Lebell. I have been doing judo for 12 years and no-gi grappling since I was 14.

How old are you now?

21

Do you know anything about David Strasser?
Nothing except from what I have seen from his last fight in the UFC.

What is your game plan against him?

I have no game plan. I never have a game plan going into a fight, anything can happen. I will do whatever is there, whatever I can to win, striking or on the ground.

What is your training like right now?

I have been training for 3 weeks so far. I have a judo tournament in August 29 so I will train for the UFC after that but training for the judo tournament will keep me in shape.

Do you train in any striking?

Not really, a little bit with Benny the Jet, and a little bit with some muay thai guys I know. But if he wants to strike I will strike. I will go wherever the fight goes.

Who would you like to fight in the future?

Matt Hughes
Do you think you can beat Hughes?

Who knows. Anything can happen.
Do you see any weaknesses?

Everyone has a weakness, for Matt Hughes I guess it would be striking.
Do you think he can use his great ground and pound on you?

Maybe, I don’t know. You never know until you get in there, anything can happen in there. I caught Sean Sherk with some judo throws. But he took me down a lot also, but I kept getting back up. I was only 18 then.

Who is the best looking man in MMA?

Me (a play off his famous instructor Gene Lebells favorite line, who by the way has been saying that a lot longer than Bas Rutten)

Who is the second best?

I could care less.

Thanks Karo for a great interview, you are truly humble and a class act. I will be putting down $500 bucks on your fight against Strasser, make me some money baby!
