KOTC

Tom Kenney: the QuestSince I first interviewed Tom Kenney in early 2004 it was apparent that he and his lucky red striped socks were destined for something great. He was on a quest, a quest to fight in Japan and a quest for the King of the Cage Welterweight belt.

I had never seen Tom fight before so when he quickly dismantled Ray Elbe at King of the Cage After Shock in early 2004 I was impressed. After that he took Jorge Pereira to decision at KOTC -Unfinished Business in June 2004 and won that fight as well. It looked as though Tom was on a fast track for a shot at the 170lb belt.

Then in March of 2005 Tom lost a tough judge decision to Charles Taylor. It seemed as though all of the momentum Tom had been building in 2004 had been stopped. Tom looked to start the momentum again in June 2005 in a fight with Aaron Torres. Tom made short work of Torres choking him out by guillotine choke at 3:33 in the first. The momentum was back.

Late 2005 Tom seemingly took a step back in his quest after he decided to take on up and comer 145er Shaun Bias. Bias defeated his teacher and mentor John DelaO and Kenney wanted revenge. “I felt that my instructor should have beat him. I was pretty upset over the way the fight went so I jumped in the ring and grabbed Terry Trebilcock and offered the challenge right then and there. I said it didn’t matter what weight or whatever. I will get to whatever weight I need to… to get the fight” Bias agreed to fight Kenney at 155. “It’s a pretty crazy weight though I haven’t been 155 since my freshman year in high school.” On the day of the weigh-ins he told me that barely anybody recognized him he was so skinny even with his trade mark 2 toned hair. During the fight it looked as though Kenney might have made a mistake cutting down to 155. Early in the second Bias dropped Kenney with a right but haphazardly dove in to Kenney’s guard setting himself up for a choke.

After getting the win Kenney was shortly ranked in the top 5 155ers for King of the Cage but he told me he would never fight at 155 again and that 170 was his weight. After seeing him the day of the fight I agreed.

During this time the 170lb belt went back in forth between James Fanshier and Thomas Denny with Fanshier winning the first fight by decision and Denny wining convincingly in the second by KO. It looked as though Kenney would have to take on Denny to get the belt but then the unexpected happened. 2-2 Matt Stansell quickly tapped Denny out with a Triangle choke sending Kenney’s shot at a belt to late 2006 early 2007 with Denny’s obvious rematch looming.

Then the unexpected happened. Denny had a contract dispute with KOTC and Stansell (rumored to be retired) would give up his title. It was announced after Kenney’s win over Bryson Kamaka that his next fight would be for the belt.

Kenney looks to complete his quest this Friday at King of the Cage Rapid Fire taking on Aaron Wetherspoon for the Welterweight title. “He’s bigger than me and stronger than me but as long as I stick to my game plane I should do pretty good.”

His main goal after the fight is the same to fight in Japan. “I will fight for Sushi in Japan.”

Tom and his socks will be ready this Friday for KOTC Rapid Fire.

Nam Phan InterviewDecember 2nd, 2005 – Soboba Casino Only moments after armbarring Kevin Donnelly in 15 seconds, Nam called out the newly crowned King of the Cage Lightweight Champion Mac Danzig. Danzig had only this to say in response, “Hey Nam you’re a good fighter but, you’re not ready to fight me buddy”. In this post fight interview Nam talks about his the possibilities of his upcoming championship fight with Danzig and his future in Japan with Pancrase and Pride.

Brad Doerges – So tell me what happened in you’re fight with Kevin Donnelly I couldn’t tell from my angle but I heard that he tried to fake a handshake and shot in…

Nam Phan – Hey what happened I thought this was a gentleman’s sport? As soon as we touched gloves boom he took the shot. I think he stacked me and took a haymaker shot… I think he scratched me right here…

Brad – Yeah he got you…

Nam – Then he threw another one and I armbarred him… I heard the pops and rips already…

Brad – It looked like you broke it…

Nam – I think I did break it… I kept hearing popping and ripping sounds then Herb Dean said “ he tapped he tapped”.

Brad – So are you the next in line to fight for the 155 belt?

Nam – Well we challenged each other… It’s in negotiation so nothings guaranteed but that s the plan for now… Well next year, I have been telling everyone; in 2006 I will be very busy with school… These classes at Cal State Fullerton cost like two thousand bucks and I don’t make that much money fighting and I’m failing… In 2006 I gotta study…

Nam Phan InterviewBrad – So what about that business card that you just got? (Nam’s Friend Reaches for the card)

Nam – No no no not the one with the strippers… (Everyone in the room laughs) I was getting interviewed by the Vietnamese channel and Art(James) Comes up to me and says this guy from Dream something something wants to talk to you… I was like ok… this guy is like My name is something something I’m from Pride… Then my jaw dropped… he was like I have been following you’re career you look pretty good. I haven’t seen many of you’re fights though since most of them have been under a minute… He was like here is my card keep in touch… I was like FUCK… He was like email me and I gave him my autobiography DVD promo thing… directed by Tung Ha from MaDu entertainment… Homestead baby…

Brad – Where can you buy that at?

Nam – No no no for you Brad for free…

Brad – Thanks Nam. Do you know when you are fighting next?

Nam – I’m fighting in March on a Sunday… That will be my last fight in 2006… I talked to some of the Pancrase guys from Japan and they said they want me to fight in the summer… Well they want me to fight in February but I told them that I have to study… Cmon guys we’re Asian you know Asian guys need to study…. So they said they will try to get me a fight in the summer and if I do good they said they will try to talk to the guys at K-1 and Deep for me… I was like oh WOW Thank You very Much…

Nam Phan InterviewBrad – So what happened before the fight? Why didn’t you fight Chris Solomon? Or Albert Hill who is on the fight card I got before the show.

Nam – So yeah they called me a while back and they are like you’re going to fight Chris Solomon… then I heard he pulled his groin and later I found out he hurt his wrist… Then I was going to fight Albert Hill and he never even showed up… Then Tedd (Williams) called a guy who fights at 170lbs and he was like I will give you X amount of money to fight and he was like I will think about it… then he called back and was like no. So then he asks this young skinny kid. I love this kid I would not want to fight him… If I were to fight him I wouldn’t throw one punch I would take him down and ankle lock him nice and soft… but thank god I didn’t fight him… so then he asks this other guy who is tall 155-160 and he says “Ok, you’re gonna fight this guy he has a lot of fights and you have no fights are you ready” he says “yes I’m ready” So he introduces me to him he says “my name is Joseph” I say “My name is Nam Phan…” Later he tells Tedd I don’t want to fight this guy… SO finally Kevin is like “I’ll fight him I’ll whoop his ass lets go!” then you saw what happened… It was a good fight I had a good time…

Brad – Yeah I bet… That’s it Nam… That’s all I got…

Nam – Hey thanks can I thank my sponsers? I want to thank my OC brothers and sisters for coming everyone from the Vietnamese community who came and for supporting me all this time. My Sponsers OC Tattoo, NorthStar, 7 Stars Karaoke, my trainer Jeremy Williams at APEX Jiu Jitsu and the APEX Jiu Jitsu team… … Art James from Team Punch-out and the amateur Anaheim boxing team… The whole MaDu fight team you know who you guys are.

Nam Phan InterviewBrad Doerges – So it’s a 3 days before your fight on Dec 2nd at King Of The Cage Do you know who you are fighting yet?

Nam Phan – This dude named Chris Solomon. I don’t really know that much about the guy but he is supposedly a very good wrestler.

Brad – Some people from Gokor’s camp told me that KOTC was thinking of putting you against Manvel Gamberyian.

Nam – Really when was this?

Brad – My sources told me that he want’s to start fighting again and that you were one of the fighters whose name came up.

Nam – On December 2nd?

Brad – Yeah…

Nam – Yeah I didn’t know about that…

Brad – He beat Sam Morgan from The Ultimate Fighter… and Sam KOed Duane Ludwig… How long ago did they tell you that you were fighting Solomon?

Nam – About a month ago…

Brad – Well that’s good the last few times it seems like they told you the day of the fight.

Nam – (Laughs) Yeah sometimes they say “Sorry Nam you have to fight this guy now…”

Brad – So where you been training to fight?

Nam – I have been training with Jeremy Williams at APEX Jiu Jitsu for no gi… I’ve been also training with Art James from Team Punch out…

Nam Phan InterviewBrad – So was it all the training at APEX that helped you beat Joe Camacho at the last Never Tap tournament?

Nam – Oh Heck yeah! Jeremy has helped me so much with my grappling… I’m from Franco’s (De Camargo) and we did mostly gi. I didn’t realize that there is a lot of tricks to no gi. Jeremy has helped me realize the things I was doing wrong and helped me correct those things for when I compete.

Brad – So did you stop training at Gracie Barra?

Nam – No I still train there… but they’ve been having some problems right now…

Brad – Yeah I heard…

Nam – Yeah so I’m taking a break… when they get things figured out I will go back… I learn a lot of Gi tricks at Gracie Barra and a lot of no gi tricks at APEX…

Brad – I hear that Pancrase was also looking into you…

Nam – Yeah but I can’t say much about that right now… I can say we talked but that’s about it…

Brad – Ok… Final question who had the best fried chicken KFC, Churches, or Popeyes?

Nam – Dude… Popeyes of course. I love Popeyes… you and I are gonna eat Popeyes after the fight…

Brad – Sounds great! Thanks for the interview.

November 17, 2005 – De La O Jiu-Jitsu Training Center Moving his way up thru the King of the Cage 170lb division, Tom Kenney is hoping to soon become the next in line to fight for the Welterweight Title. Although his next fight is at 155, Kenney hopes to avenge his teachers, John DeLao, recent loss and move one step closer to his ultimate goal of winning a championship belt at 170.

Tom Kenney InterviewBrad Doerges – So your next fight is Shawn Bias from Team Fury at King of the Cage: Final Conflict. Why have you decided to go down to 155 to fight Bias when you usually fight at 170?

Tom Kenney – He fought my instructor (John DeLao) in a King of the Cage in August… and he beat my instructor… I felt that my instructor should have beat him. I was pretty upset over the way the fight went so I jumped in the ring and grabbed Terry Trebilcock and offered the challenge right then and there. I said it didn’t matter what weight or whatever. I will get to whatever weight I need to… to get the fight.

Brad – Did he agree right then and there?

Tom – Well I talked to the promoters and I told them the weight doesn’t matter. So they told me at first ok the fight will be at 160. Then a couple weeks later they said ok now its 155. I told them what ever it takes…. I will make that weight. It’s a pretty crazy weight though I haven’t been 155 since my freshman year in high school.

Brad – So is there any bad blood between you and Bias?

Tom – No, I haven’t talked to him and I have nothing against him. I was just upset that he beat my instructor. My instructor who I have trained every day with for the last 5 years and he beats the crap outta me… I just feel that my instructor should have beat him. Its’ the least I could do… he has turned a hobby of mine into a career.

Tom Kenney InterviewBrad – I noticed that Shawn tapped in his last fight against Urijah Faber from a Guillotine Choke and that you defeated your last opponent Aaron Torres by Guillotine. Will you be looking for that submission?

Tom – No… I love doing Jiu Jitsu but I use it as more of a back ground so I know how to get out of stuff… I like to punch people… My submission of choice is punches. Come December 2nd Shawn Bias is going to be my punching bag.

Brad – Bias fought his last fight at 145 do you feel that you will have the strength advantage?

Tom – Maybe, I don’t really look at it like that. I know it will be a tough fight. There is no such thing as an easy fight. I know he is a good wrestler he has good conditioning and he will come at me real aggressive. I feel that I will be a little bit stronger than him but it will be a good fight. I guarantee its going to be an exciting fight. I don’t fight to lose and he doesn’t either. We will both be swinging for the fences.

Brad – Who do you think will win the 170lb King of the Cage title fight between James Fanshier and Thomas Denny at King of the Cage: Fianl Conflict?

Tom – I don’t know they are both very good fighters. Thomas Denny fights a lot of fight and is very experienced. Fanshier is a good striker and he is pretty good on the ground. The last fight they had was a toss up it could have gone either way but Franshier landed that big right… I think that’s why they gave it to him. It will be an entertaining fight since there is a lot of bad blood between the two. I will definitely be watching that since that’s the weight class I like to fight at.

Brad – Who would you rather fight for the belt?

Tom – Totally different fighters. It doesn’t really matter to me. I have talked to James at a few King of the Cages and he is a cool guy… Either one would be a good fight. They got a bunch of tough guys at 170 right now. I think that’s the weight class to fight at. It’s a very competitive weight class.

Brad – 155 aint bad ethier.

Tom – Forget that weight class. I like eating FOOD. A lot of FOOD.

Tom Kenney InterviewBrad – Well I guess that brings me to my next question. If you are successful at 155 will you continue to fight at that weight class?

Tom – I dunno man it’s pretty hard to get down to that weigh class. I’m not a natural 155.

Brad – Well you wrestled in highschool…

Tom – Yeah I wrestled at 160 my freshman year and my sophomore thru senior year at 171.

Brad – So who do you think the best at 170 in KOTC is right now?

Tom – King of the Cage has a lot of tough guys – John Allesio he’s right there… Mike Guymon that guy is a stud.

Brad – What about overall?

Tom – I got Matt Hughes. He’s the man. Riggs is tough Karos tough… Right now the 170 pound division has unlimited talent and the UFC has all of it. The UFC bar none has the best 170lb weight class.

Brad – Have you been contacted for The Ultimate Fighter season three?

Tom – Well I got an email from one of the members of your website. I was trying to put together a highlight video and after it was made I was contacted by Joe Silva of the UFC. So I sent him the DVD of the Highlight and now I’m waiting.

Tom Kenney InterviewQuestions from the MMA-Fighter.com Forum

Brad – Do you know your opponents strong points?

Tom – He’s a scrappy guy… He’s a good wrestler and he doesn’t quit. As long as I push the fight and control the fight then I’ll win.

Brad – Are you happy to stay in KOTC? Would you consider leaving for another organization?

Tom – If they get in contact with me and offer me something good then of course I would be interested. Terry (Trebilcock), Tedd (Williams), and Shaun have treated me good. What I mean by that is that they tell you something and they are good for thier word. Other promoters I have fought for have promised me money, have promised me this, promised me tha,t then they don’t pay me. Or they give me a ride to the fight and not a ride back to the hotel. I have dealt with a lot of shitty promoters and Terry, Tedd, and Shaun have taken care of me… they have been a class act all the way.

Brad – Is there any dream opponent that you would like to fight?

Tom – Matt Hughes but I know he would probably destroy me… but at least I got my ass beat by the UFC champ.

Brad – How long do you plan on fighting.

Tom – As long as my body will hold up. It sounds funny but my last couple fights I was banged up pretty bad. In my last fight I couldn’t even lift my arm over my head because my shoulder was jacked up so bad. At least a couple more years but the key thing is that I want a nice shiny belt. I won a belt in grappling now I want to win one in fighting.

Brad – what level would he like to fight at before it’s all over?

Tom – I would love to go fight in Japan. It doesn’t matter where. I would go fight in some bodies back yard. Just to go over there and how they respect us as athletes. Over here in America it’s human cock fighting. They respect us as warriors…

Brad – What is your diet like right now?

Tom – Right now it’s pretty ridiculous… I’m kinda nutty right now cuz I don’t have any food in me. In the morning I have 2 scoops of oatmeal and 1 scoop of protein as a shake and then I have an hour and half of cardio…. After that eat a cliff bar then go and have two hours of Jiu Jitsu and boxing. Then I have a small spinach salad go and do a run and then have another small spinach salad. So right now I’m basically a vegetarian. I just eat all vegetables.

Karo Parisyan InterviewIn the last interview I met Karo Parisyan at the Hayastan Grappling Academy in Hollywood California and talked to Karo about his upcoming fight with Matt Hughes and his experience with Randy Couture. In the second part of the interview we talk about his past fights with Sean Sherk, Jason Miller, Nick Diaz, George St Pierre, and his first UFC fight against Dave Strasser.

Brad Doerges – So how was fighting Sean Sherk?

Karo Parisyan – He was strong when I fought him. I was 18 and he was 26. Sean Sherk went to the hospital after the fight. I mean Sean can’t deny it. He got his ass whooped the first time we fought. I’ll give you numbers of the promoter, Chris Brennan, Steve Berger… I’ll give you numbers call these mother fuckers’s. It was an 8 man tournament. He could not continue the tournament. He was supposed to fight Chris in the next round and he said “I’m done”. He was in the locker room with ice all over his body. He had a concussion. He didn’t even pick up his money. The promoter told me he called like two weeks later and was like “can I get my money?” He left bro… he couldn’t continue… and I was there with two strippers on my lap drinking beers. When I fought him there was no way he was 170. I bet my life on that. He was sitting next to me… there was Shonie Carter, Steve Berger, Chris Brennan, and me… a bunch of good welter weights around. Then they announced… Karo Paryisan and Sean Sherk… so looking around I’m thinking “Who’s Sean Sherk?” He’s right next to me. I’m like it can’t be this guy he’s like a heavy weight. I walk out and this guy’s in the cage… I’m like “are you kidding me?” I wasn’t worried I had fought many guys like that before… but Sean is quality…. he is strong and a good wrestler. He just shot in on me with doubles. He’s real nice guy but he is a boring fighter. Sean take’s Hughes 5 rounds and wins 2 of them but they don’t ask for him back. I mean it’s the closest anyone had gotten to beating him, usually Hughes just dominates. Trigg goes in there against Hughes and get’s handled… they want him back.

Dave Mandel – Do you ever feel there is extra pressure to not only beat a guy but make it exciting?

Karo – They are like dude you gotta make a good impression or they won’t bring you back. I was at 170 a month before the (Dave) Strasser fight I was so excited about it. I popped a rib a week before the fight and I had to have a cortisone shot… I was dead in my brain… people were calling me like Karo I have so much money on you… I was like shut the fuck up… Chris Brennan calls me is like “I put 2000 dollars on you… but no pressure.” I’m like get the fuck outta my site bro. I’ll kill these mother fuckers… Leave me the fuck alone… The surprising thing was that once I got to the fight I felt fine… Once I got in on him I was like I can throw this guy… I thought he was gonna be way better. He beat Romi Aram who had beat Jerry Bohlander who had fought Tito Ortiz. Strasser goes all three rounds with him gasses him out. Mounts him… I’m thinking this guy is good grappler… He can strike too… I saw him fight Chris Lytle… Chris Lytle is a class act a great guy and good fighter too… He just couldn’t get his game going with me. I just didn’t want him to hit me… He rocked Robbie (Lawler) in that stand up war. I don’t want any of that shit I’m just gonna take him down.

Brad – So who do you think is the best Judoka in MMA right now?

Karo – Me.

Brad – Well besides you.

Karo – Honestly, when I say me I don’t mean like of course me no… I know 3 Olympic champions that just fought in the last Pride. These guys I used to watch when I was a little child. Pawel Nastula, Yoshida who beat my friend in the Olympics 92’ Jason Morris and Takimoto my weight champion 81kg 2000 Olympic champion. That guy is amazing in Judo. He’ll grip you… you just lost. Did you see what happened to all 3 of them though? Yoshida is doing the best out of all the Judo guys. Yoshida is very capable of beating Vanderlei. They just can’t get that whole Judo thing going. Fedor says he’s Judo but he is also Sambo. But Fedor is an insane mother fucker. I mean Fedor would get schooled by them in Judo but Fedor is more of an all around guy. Chris Leninger an American Judo guy fought in the UFC got handled. I thank God that I’m one of the fortunate guys that I can actually display Judo in an MMA fight. I mean like specific Judo throws not just a takedown.

Brad – What about Nakamura?

Karo – Naw he’s not a Judo guy. Well he’s a Judo guy but not like Yoshida. He hasn’t won anything you can’t compare him to Yoshida he’s not even close. I’m not even a real Judoka next to those guys. Those guys are Olympic world champions. I’ve beaten Olympians before. I have won internationals before but no where close to winning an Olympics or a Worlds. That shit is just beyond… you got 80 guys in your division… 120 nations competing in the tournament all the best and the US sucks… we are all the way down at the bottom with Somolia … we have only had two world champions in the history of judo… Iran has more championships than we do…

Brad – What do you feel about BJ Penn’s Claim to the UFC 170 belt?

Karo – Well he left for a good reason. 175 thousand I heard he was gonna get paid… I would have left too… I mean he fought Duane Ludwig… He damn well knew he could take him down and submit him… that’s like easy money… go get your money and fly back to Hawaii… He said if you book me 4 fights with Hughes I’ll fight Hughes all 4 times… The guy isn’t trying to dodge anybody… Chuck Liddell or Randy or Matt… I mean these are guys that should be getting paid but it shouldn’t be that big of a difference… give us something more, we put on a good show… Mother Fuckers have never seen throws like that… To be honest I just gotta beat Matt Hughes…

Brad – Then you could open up your own school?

Karo – Well even if I lose I still want to open up my own school.

Brad – Where do you want to open it up at?

Karo – I dunno man somewhere there are a lot of rich people are.

Brad – Orange County.

Karo – You live in Orange County?

Brad – Yup

Karo – Would you go to my school?

Brad – Sure.

Karo – Well you damn well should. It’s too far away though. Maybe Studio City. Maybe Calabassis. When I stand up and open up a school it can’t be too expensive. I need to advertise pretty good because a lot of people don’t know who Karo Parisyan is.

Dave Mandel – Do you still want to fight after you open up a school? Do you think that running a school will interfere with your fighting career?

Karo – Yes I’m still young. Once you open up a school you start a business. You always have to be thinking what’s best for the school. When you don’t have a school you can train when ever you want. I think the best situation is to open a school after you retire but, I’m too young to retire. I hate training so much. I’m a lazy guy. I’m telling you I have fought fights that I didn’t even train for. I only trained a week and a half when I fought Jason Miller.. Did you see that fight?

Brad – No I haven’t. Did you submit him?

Karo – No I beat Miller worse than George St Pierre did probably. I mounted him I did what ever I wanted to him. I threw him, I had him armbarred and his arm was completely stretched out. Then the doctor threw a towel in but he got out so we were like what’s going on? The doctor was basically trying to let the referee know that Miller wasn’t responding to anything and that maybe he should stop the fight. I beat him up bad. He was talking shit before and during the fight. I cussed his corner out Tiki (Ghosn), Quinton Jackson, and (Colin) Oyama. I was smiling at them and hitting him when I had him mounted. They were in Little Armenia so they couldn’t do shit.

Brad – Your last fight in the UFC was with Matt Serra. Did you think Matt Serra would present that much of a challenge for you?

Karo – He still wasn’t a problem. Delete the first 10 seconds of that fight and it was one of my easiest fights. He’s very hard to throw. He’s like a cat. Even John McCarthy said Karo he’s hard to throw. He was just too small for me. I’m a natural 170 he’s putting on weight to be 170. I cut a lot of weight for that fight. If you saw me during the weigh ins and if you saw me the next day, huge change. Huge change in my body. I weighed in at 169 and the next day I was 184. Pedolyte. I drink a whole big pedolyte. Then I ate. I had a huge chicken sandwich with fries and chicken wings. That night I had ice cream and chocolate cake.

Brad – You just eat anything you want before a fight… after you make weight?

Karo – Yeah… It’s just not right. Armenian food is very rich. I love cheese. Cheese and bread. That’s why I’m a dough boy.

Brad – You ever gonna look like Sean Sherk?

Karo – No maybe Fedor. When he fought Goodridge, it looked like he got jumped by ten men. I love that guy.

Brad – Nick Diaz is a respected grappler but it seemed like you were able to stay one step ahead of him. How did Diaz feel on the ground?

Karo – I don’t know who said that Nick Diaz is a good grappler. Because he submitted Jeremy Jackson? But he’s very good at getting in peoples head. He just gets in your head. He was calling Robbie a bitch he slapped Robbie.

Brad – That slap was loud.

Karo – He got in Robbies head. Did you see him when he fought me? He was scared. “I think it’s a bad match up for me…” He said that during the preflight interview. Who says that? Diaz is a tough kid. He will keep on coming, he doesn’t give up. He hit me in the first round I was like “this guy knocked out Robbie?” With Robbie he just caught him clean on his jaw *bink* just dropped him. I think Chris Lylte is better on the ground than Nick Diaz. He has a better inside guard. Good sweeps. Not like a better grappler but for MMA he is better. I’ve never seen him (Diaz) go for a submission on anyone and he tried to go for a kimura on me. It’s like trying to power punch with Tyson. It was actually very tight but he didn’t have it right. It was a very close fight. Thank God I was able to edge out the decision.

Brad – What do you think about the UFC’s newest member Diego Sanchez?

Karo – Did you know he challenged me? At the UFC fight he was doing an interview and he said the first guy I want to fight is Karo Parisyan. What I think of him? He’s strong… a tough kid.

Brad – He’s fast too…

Karo – Really?

Brad – Yeah we saw him at Abu Dhabi… He looked very fast.

Karo – How did he do?

Dave Mandel – He lost his first match to Jake Shields.

Karo – Oh yeah? I heard he lost to Marcello Garcia.

Dave – Yeah he did. Marcelo had him in an armbar for a while.

Brad – Your school is known for leg locks what is your favorite submission?

Karo – Armbar. Armbar…kimura… Anything with the arms, Triangles, then chokes…. Leg locks are good submission but they are too easy to do… I’ll do leg locks if I know im gonna catch a guy for sure. I’ve broken ankles at Kage Kombat before.

Brad – Did you get invited to Abu Dhabi?

Karo – Yeah I got invited twice before but, I hate the weight categories. 76 Kilos.

Brad – Trigg and Hallman were in the weight class above that… and Jacare.

Karo – Jacare… Is he good?

Brad – He handled Hallman.

Karo – really? How.

Brad – Take Down to sidemount then worked an Armbar.

Dave Mandel – Textbook.

Karo – He’s too strong for him. Too big. Hallmans a good submission guy right?

Brad – Yeah he tapped Trigg pretty fast.

Karo – I should have gone. But I don’t want to fight 186… If it was 175 I would be there… But that’s my shit. Standup to ground with grappling.

Brad – Roger Gracie just won the ADCC absolute division do you feel he is the best grappler in the world right now?

Karo – I’ve never seen any of his matches. I have to see them to make my decision. All I know is that everyone is taking about this Marcello Garcia guy. Everyone is talking about this kid along with Jacare. I don’t know who the best is. What is the best? I’ve been against Brazilian black belt guys that will supposedly choke me out… before the Serra fight like I wanna go and test my self. I schooled these guys because they are straight Jiu Jitsu. They are not strong. I come from a Judo background where you have to be real strong and we are rough too. I love rolling with Jiu Jitsu guys… not like it… LOVE it. I went up against this dude up in Big Bear when I was helping Vitor train for his fight. His friend a 6’5 Brazilian, imagine how crazy this guy would be, but I handled him. He was like “maybe it’s something I eat?” Then Vitor was like “Karo come here… hit me as hard as you can.” I was like “are you crazy?” Vitor is a great guy too. People underestimate his grappling… he’s got some pretty good skills. He’s strong too but not as strong as he should be to fight Randy at 205… Randy is a Tank… He pushes like a truck too…

Brad – So a big fight is coming up between Chuck Liddell and Jeremy Horn. Who do you think will win?

Karo – Probably Chuck. I don’t know… Horn’s a smart fighter. Don’t look past him. Chuck might win because he is stronger and the better striker but, Horn is still good. Don’t underestimate him.

Brad – You think Chuck is gonna try to play that ground game with him?

Karo – Pat (Miletich) told me last time their plan was for Horn to go in and punch him. Chuck took him down and it was over.

Dave Mandel – If you could pick your opponent for after this Hughes fight who would you pick?

Karo – Georges St-Pierre. Him vs Trigg is gonna be a sick ass fight. Anything can happen but I’m leaning towards Trigg in that fight since I trained with Trigg and fought St-Pierre. Georges is good thought he has good strikes and he is a good wrestler.

Brad – Is he stronger than Trigg?

Karo – He’s not strong he’s agile. Positioning wise Trigg is stronger. I’ve dumped Trigg before too but he is fast… great singles and doubles. It can go either way.

Brad – What would you do different if you were to fight St. Pierre again?

Karo – I wouldn’t cut so much weight the day before the fight. (Josh) Thompson’s camp had to drag me out of the sauna. It was bad. Me and Hughes both had trouble making weight that UFC and we both lost. But i make no excuses… St Pierre was the better fighter that day.

Dave Mandel – If Trigg beats St-Pierre and you beat Hughes would it be weird for you to have to fight Trigg since you’ve trained with him?

Karo – No. I know eventually I’m gonna have to face St Pierre, Trigg… eventually I’m going to have face all these guys. Is that all the questions?

Brad – Yeah that’s all I got…

Karo – Damn man you got a lot of questions.

Brad – Well you talk too much.

Karo – Yeah I know. But you have never had this much fun at an interview before…

Brad – No I haven’t. Thanks Man

Karo – No Problem.

Special Thanks to Sam “Soldia” Yang, to Dave Mandel, and to Karo “the Heat” Parisyan.

Part 1

Karo Parisyan InterviewI caught up with Karo Parisyan last week shortly after he finished a private lesson, a double cheeseburger, and a coke. He is fresh off a decisive win against Matt Serra and waiting in line for the biggest fight of his life; a chance at the UFC Welter Weight belt and at MMA’s most dominate champion: Matt Hughes.

Brad Doerges: So your next fight is with Matt Hughes?

Karo Parisyan: Uh Yes…

Brad: Is that confirmed?

Karo: No, not yet. Not against Hughes. A 3 fight contract… but not against Hughes. (The next week it was confirmed on another MMA news site.)

Brad: So you have 2 more fights left on that?

Karo: I need more money though… To sign the contract I need more money to fight Hughes. Hughes is a fighter… he is a champion. If I’m gonna fight for the title I need more money.

Brad: I’m with you… How much does he make a fight? 50 to fight 50 to win?

Karo: No naw man… He just signed a contract for 3 fights for 45O thousand

Brad: Wow…

Karo: He made like 60 to fight 60 to win like 3 years ago… Now it’s more. He’s got a reality show now. I told Dana how about you put me and Matt on the reality show to promote the fight like Chuck and Randy.

Brad: That’s a good idea. I thought it was weird that they put coaches from 2 different weight classes.

Matt HughesKaro: They wanted to put me against him (Hughes) in the reality show that’s coming up in August. They wanted to give me a month to train for a title fight. Are you fucking nuts? I need like 2 ½ – 3 months to train… God forbid I lose at least I know that I trained for the fight.

Brad: The first fight I ever saw u fight was against Fernando Vasconcelos. I actually thought that guy was gonna beat you.

Karo: You did? A lot of people thought that.

Brad: Well he was Jiu Jitsu world champion… Mundials winner.

Karo: A lot of people were like Karo he’s bullet proof he’s amazing…

Brad: Hah! He couldn’t even take you down.

Karo: The hardcore guys like my friends.. Chris Brennan… they are calling me telling me “oh Karo you’ll beat him… trust me you’ll beat him… he can’t beat you…” When Terry (Trebilcock) called me he was like he’s just a Jiu Jitsu black belt. Then I find out this guy schools Trigg…. He was killing Shonie… World Champion Jiu Jitsu guy I was like what are you nuts dude? I fought 3 fights. I fought Jason Miller, Antonio McKee, and Fernando Vasconcelos in 3 ½ months. It was ridiculous. I dunno for some reason those were all really tough guys but I never really felt that much pressure on me for those fights. Now with the UFC it’s much harder. I mean my opponents are not that much better but the training and stuff is a lot harder. I don’t like it.

Brad: So you don’t like the pressure?

Karo: Well the pressure is always there. One of the major things I hate is cutting that much weight. I hate cutting to 170.

Brad: What do you weigh right now?

Karo: I’m still going up. I’m about 184. The most I have ever been was before the Serra fight. Two months before the Serra fight I was 194. Never been that big in my life.

Brad: Cheeseburger diet?

Karo: No actually I wasn’t eating that unhealthy. I was eating normal but I wasn’t training as much…

Brad: Did you know that if you beat Fernando you would be going to the UFC?

Karo: Well Gokor has been telling Joe Silva for a while get Karo in there and he was always like “We’ll see”. Honestly I was never like “Oh I wanna go to the UFC”, I’m just a Judo guy and I fight when ever I want. It was just one day I got a call at like 8 in the morning and Gokor is like congratulations you got in the UFC. Then I was like oh shit! I’m in the UFC. I was excited and like 2 months later oh I’m fighting Strasser? I was like I don’t care I’m fighting in the UFC!

Brad: What do you think the key to beating Matt Hughes is?

Karo: Well with Matt Hughes against me I’m pretty sure he is gonna have one game. His game is gonna be a ground and pound. Take me down muscle me and ground and pound me. He’s not gonna have anything like a left hook to right upper cut to a drop fireman’s to an armbar. It’s not gonna happen. God forbid it doesn’t happen. Anything can happen in a fight and Matt Hughes is the champion… he is unbelievable… I’m not underestimating him at all.

Brad: Should be a great fight.

Karo: I just know what he’s gonna try and do. He’s gonna try to out muscle me. If he tries to out grapple me that won’t be that smart for him. He shouldn’t try to grapple a grappler it’s like me trying to box a boxer. He will throw punches and kicks with me for sure but its all going to come down to him muscling me towards the cage and trying to take me down to set up his ground and pound. I’m going to try to circle away and try to take him down myself.

Brad: So do you think you will be able to throw him?

Frank Trigg V Matt HughesKaro: I have thrown a lot of guys before. I’ve foot swept Randy (Couture) before. I’ve thrown Dan Henderson before. It’s practice but I have fought great wrestlers before. In a fight it’s different because you have punches but when we clinch up… It’s like Judo guys have the footwork Randy and Hughes are more steady. I think Trigg is a better wrestler but Hughes is just stronger and pushes like a truck. If you have seen the first fight between Hughes and Trigg, Trigg was just killing him. Boom boom boom he was all over him because he had so much confidence in himself. If he had fought the same fight that he fought the first time in their last fight he would have beaten Hughes. But once you lose to somebody… they are in your head…

Brad: Hughes has won his last 2 fights by submission, are you afraid of his submission skills?

Karo: No. Big NO. But I mean anything can happen. I’m not underestimating him. He definatetly has the power to submit people… Skill to some point… If he gets somebody’s neck he will submit anybody because of his strength…

Brad: Have you ever trained with him or wrestled with him?

Karo: I never have even talked to him before, then at the last UFC he came into my dressing room before the Serra fight and said “Good luck Buddy”. I was like Hmmm That’s interesting

Brad: What about his stand up?

Karo: Well he’s not Pete Spratt… What I mean is he’s not a kickboxer… He can still hit hard but like I said the only thing I’m gonna look for is… well not saying that I’m not gonna look out for his hands since last time when I fought Serra I almost got paid for it big time. Like I said before my biggest concern is him taking me down.

Brad: Have you been working on your standup for this fight?

Karo: Yeah, I’m starting to work with a professional boxing trainer. I have a seminar then I’m coming back to work with him. He’s supposed to be the hottest trainer right now. Start training some boxing and hit a lot of weights. Maybe train with Randy or something.

Brad: So how many times have you trained with Randy before?

Karo: I trained with him a few times. I called him before the last UFC and I told him Gene and Gokor aren’t gone be there (for the Serra fight) will you corner for me? He said “yeah for sure of course anything at all”. So after I told him any time you are down here call me up and we can train. So I knew he would be down here last Thursday so I called him up and he was like I can’t I’m booked in meetings. So was like fine call me whenever you can. Then he called me back and told me that his meetings were cancelled and that he would meet me at my dojo later.

Randy CoutureBrad: So what was it like having Randy in your corner?

Karo: It was good… He was giving good advice like “Posture up.”, “Make your shots count.”, “Keep him there”… Great confidence booster… He’s a great guy… Honestly bro he’s an ace… A class act… I’m telling you that you can’t find too many guys like Randy… If he likes you, you’re set… He had to wear a KTFO hat and a Full Contact shirt so I could get paid because of my contract… He said no problem I’ll do anything to help you out. He’s like the best. In the UFC he’s the best as a fighter as a person as a coach. At the last UFC me and him walked into the training room with like 10 cameras after us Beyond the Glory… They were like “hey Randy can we take some photos?” and he says “Well it’s Karo’s show you’re gonna have to ask him.” I’m like “Uh Yeah! Most definitely.” Insane. I couldn’t even walk outside. People trying to get my autograph on napkins… Crazy.

Be Sure to look for part 2 where Karo talks about his fights with Sean Sherk, training with Vitor Belfort, and his thoughts on a rematch with Georges St Pierre.

Part 2

Soboba Casino June 12th, 2005 San Jacinto, California

Nam PhanKing of the Cage up and comer Nam Phan impressed the crowd and his numerous fans in the Main Event fight of the night. Giving up almost 20lbs to last minute match up Sost “the Minute Man” Infante did nothing to stop Nam from getting his 3rd win in a row after losing a tough decision (split) to Nic Ertl (Cesar Gracie) at WEC 11.

Sost wasted no time in getting away from Nam’s hard hitting hands by closing the gap and getting Nam up against the cage. Phan and Infante traded knees but it was Phan’s punch from the clinch that would end the fight. Phan landed a right hook to Sost’s left eye opening up a large cut above the bigger mans eye. Sost was able to take Phan down shortly after the punch but the ref was forced to stop the fight after the doctor was unable to stop the bleeding. Phan TKO (Cut) 0:51 Rd 1

In the final fight of the night King of the Cage rookie Emmanuel Ley from San Diego fought Ray “Lights Out” Lazama. Lazama’s last fight was an impressive win in his fight vs. Aaron Wetherspoon.

The fight begins with Ray and Ley clinching. Ray gets the double under hooks and works for a takedown but Ley counters with a guillotine attempt. The fighters brake apart and Ley looks to shoot a double while Lazama looks to keep it standing by throwing several kicks and punches. The fighters once again clinch with Lazama getting the best of it by landing several hard knees and few good rights. The fighters once again break apart this time Lazama throws some more punches hurting Ley, but Ley fires back with some big lefts. The fighters clinch again with Ray getting some good knees but he gets sloppy and Ley takes advantage by landing a left that sends Lazama to the mat. With Lazama visibly hurt for some reason Ley falls right into his guard then goes for a leg lock. After a scramble Lazama ends up with side mount. Ley is able to counter and flip Lazama over but Ray gets Emmanuel in his guard then goes for a triangle. Ley is able to escape as the round ends.

Round 2 starts with some more Clinch work with Ray able to get off several knees to Leys head. Ley is eventually able to get the takedown but once again is put in Lazama’s triangle where he is unable to escape and forced to give up early in the second round. Lazama tap out Triangle Rd 2.

Devon “Much Love” Miller came down the ramp with a sign that said “Love cannot be defeated”. Nothing is further from the truth. Randy Velarde showed that love can’t conquer all by quickly knocking out his opponent. Velarde TKO 0:41 Rd 1

Another King of the Cage fan favorite Thomas “the Wildman” Denny took on relative new comer Thomas Padilla. Padilla took this fight with less than a months rest after beating Adolphus Walker in a May King of the Cage event. Thomas beat Ray Elbe by submission in his last fight

Denny wasted no time coming after Padilla by throwing out a push kick followed by a right and a left. After throwing a wild high kick Denny takes down Padilla who impressively gets back up to his feet. Denny showing his wrestling skills slams Padilla down to the map with a text book double leg. Working from sidemount Denny easily passes to full mount and Padilla gives up his back. Denny slides in his hooks breaks down Padillas base and finishes with the rear naked choke. Denny fires up the crowd for his next opponent a rematch with James Fanshier for the King of the Cage 170lb belt. Denny Tap Out (Rear Naked Choke) 1:54 1

Coming from “the Streets of Anaheim” Thomas Kenney fought Aaron Torres from the Shark Tank. Although Kenny asked me when I talked to him before the fight if I knew anything about Torres he didn’t seem scared one bit, just excited about his new big sponsor DeWALT and the future of big sponsors in MMA.

Thomas wasted no time in shooting for the double leg but Torres countered by getting an underhook. Kenney then looked for a high crotch take down but gave up when Torres countered with knees. Kenney then finally secured the double under hooks and took Torres down to the delight of his many fans chanting his name from the cheap seats. Kenney landed in Torres half guard then looked to pass to sidemount but Torres defended well so Kenny tried passing to full mount and in a scramble Torres was able to push Kenney off and secure his back. Torres then attempts a rear naked choke but Thomas defends well and is able to stand up. After both fighters are up Kenney gets a double leg but this time Torres counters with a guillotine. Kenney is able to escape and push Torres up against the fence then pass to the side where he delivers some knees to the body. Torres is able to escape from the bottom again but when he tries to take Thomas down Kenney applies a deep guillotine choke that ends the fight standing. Kenney Tap Out (Guillotine Choke) 3:33 Rd 1

John Cole looked to take on Richard Solis for the 3rd time in this one sided grudge match. Cole decisively beat Solis in there first 2 fights by simply over powering him. Cole just took Solis down and used his superior wrestling to work his ground and pound to get 2 unanimous decisions. Talking with Richard before the fight I was shocked to learn that he was fighting Solis for the 3rd time, I knew he was on the card but didn’t know he was going up against Cole again. In Richards last fight vs. Cole he was training at the same BJJ School (Ralph Gracie OC) as me so I would often shoot the shit with him and some other students after class. Not wanting to see Richard get beat again by Cole but not wanting to spook him before a big fight I asked him where he was training and how and how it was going. He said his training was going good and that he was training a lot of stand up.

Solis comes out looking to trade punches but Cole backs away looking for his opportunity to shoot for the takedown. They eventually end up in the clinch where Solis lands a few punches and Cole lands a few knees. The ref breaks them up from the clinch and Solis begins to throw punches again but this time Cole decides to trade instead of backing away and ends up getting caught by a few of Richards punches. Hurt, Cole covers up and Solis begins to knee the wounded fighter to the head and body. Solis lands a big knee to Coles chin dropping the wrestler to his knees where Solis is able to get the ref stoppage. Great fight Richard! Solis TKO 1:55 Rd 1

John Paulson from team Subfighter took on Shad Smith who came down to the ring in Hannibal the Cannibal type outfit including the straight jacket and the mask. Shad came out swinging but Paul is able to connect with a big right after Shads telegraphed left hook misses. The punch sends Smith to the mat where Paulson begins to work to secure Shad’s back and apply the rear naked choke. Shad defends the choke well and is able to stall out for the stand up. The ref stands them up but Shad throws another right hand down left hook and this time is knocked out by the same big right that hurt him earlier. Paulson KO 1:19 Rd 1

In the 10th fight of the night Erik “Bad” Apple took on KOTC new comer Mark Thorne. Apple wasted no time taking down Thorne and scooting him to his corner where he worked his ground and pound while corner men Justin Levens and Mike Guymon shouted out instructions. Thorne attempted an arm bar but Erik was able to escape that and a few ankle lock attempts before ending up back on top. Apple was later able to pass guard and finished the round pounding Thorne from the mount position.

Round 2 brought more of the same. Apple started the round with a few Ruas like low kicks that made Mark wince. Apple then effortlessly took down Mark and moved to side mount. Apple began to apply a Key lock but abandoned the submission for a better position by getting mount. Mark them gave up his back but after taking a few punches from Erik decided to roll to sidemount instead. Apple took advantage of his scrambling opponent by getting knee on belly and landing enough heavy punches to get Marks corner to throw in the towel. This gave the King of the Cage PBP announcer his 6th win in a row. Apple TKO (Corner Stoppage) 1:57 Rd 2

Cipi Gamino took the mount early and delivered enough punches to Bucky Hamilton to make him tap out with only 1:19 gone by in the first. Gamino tap out strikes 1:19 Rd 1

King of the Cage: San Jacinto Under Card

The first under card fight of the night was between Mac Danzig and Mike Valdez from New Mexico. The fight went quickly to the ground where Danzig was able to secure Mikes back then finish the fight with a RNC after an impressive ground display by both men. Danzig submission Rear Naked Choke Rd 1 4:20

Illiums Goglia came out quickly with a flurry of punches and knees against Nick “Time Bomb” Davanzo but Nick countered with a great throw taking the fight to the mat. Goglia is able to escape get to Nicks back and quickly apply the choke. Goglia Submission (Rear Naked Choke) 1:39 Rd 1

Paul Perry’s fight debut against Robert Dupont was a quick one. Perry got the easy takedown but Dupont was able to stand up where Paul delivered several knees to Roberts’s body from the clinch. Paul once again scored a takedown but go to excited and started to kick his downed opponent. The fight was stopped, Paul was warned, and a point was deducted. The fight was restarted on the feet where Perry landed a right hand that bloodied Roberts nose. After that punch Robert seemed to look out of it and Perry took advantage of it landing several more punches on the feet and on the ground.Perry TKO Ref stoppage 1:19 Rd 1

Victor Hunsaker works early for the takedown in his fight with Bill Duvall and gets it. Hunsaker then begins to apply the most brutal ground pound of the night. Duvall has no answer to Hunsakers brutal onslaught of punches and elbows. Hunsaker only slows when he begins to tire. Victor stands up in Bills open guard and drops for a heel hook that Hunsaker is unable secure. Bill begins to roll out of it but gets himself in a bad position where Hunsaker is able to lock in a Toe Hold to finish the fight. Hunsaker submission toe hold 1:33 1

Anthony Ruiz takes the fight to the ground where Eddie “Dirty” Sanchez is able to secure high guard. Ruiz begins to Ground and Pound Sanchez but is unable to fight off the numerous submissions. He eventually is caught in a triangle where he stays inactive forcing the ref to stop the fight. Ruiz and his corner dispute the call but Sanchez is awarded the victory. Sanchez submission Triangle Choke 2:49 Rd 1

In the 6th fight of the night Armando “Mondo” Sanchez took on the more experienced Kyle “Spider-Man” Olsen. The fight begins in a ground battle with Mondo going for several submissions but each time Olsen is crafty enough to find his way out. The fight is briefly stopped when Sanchez is incidentally poked in the eye. Sanchez is able to continue where the ground war begins again with Mondo once again applying submissions and Kyle being able to miraclesly escape. For no apparent reason other than being tired Kyle taps out when Mondo has side control. Kyle takes an unusually long time to stand up and then collapses when the winner is being announced. Kyle is treated with oxygen and is eventually able to walk out on his own power. Sanchez tap out 2:21 Rd 1

The 7th fight of the evening featured Chris Brennan’s student Josh Smith from Dana Point CA, making his debut at King of the Cage. His opponent was Joey Alvarado a Machado blue belt from Los Angeles CA. This fight was definitely my under card fight of the night. The fight starts with Smith throwing a push kick and Alvarado following immediately with a take down. There is struggle and Smith ends up getting Alvarado to the ground but Joey is able to get up after fighting off a choke. After a spinning back fist attempt by Smith the fight once gain goes to the ground with Smith effectively working his GNP from Alvarado’s guard. Alvarado then locks in a deep armbar attempt but is forced to give it up when Smith illegally knees Alvarado to the head. The ref stands them up and Smith wastes no time rocking Alvarado with a huge right hand which sends him straight to the mat. Alvarado recovers well and gets Smith into his half guard. Alvarado scrambles to his feet where he is immediately pushed up against the fence by Smith who begins to land knees and another big right punch. Smith tops off his great clinch work by getting his hips under Alvarado’s and executing a perfect throw. The throw is all for naught though as Alvarado is able to quickly reverse the throw and get side mount. Smith stands up again but Alvarado answers with a Knee. Smith backs away then throws a high kick that is effectively blocked by Alvarado. Smith follows with a series of punches but Alvarado answers with a right of his own that forces Smith to look for the takedown. The round ends with Smith taking down Alvarado.

Second round begins with the fighters trading punches and Alvarado getting a takedown. Alvarado works his GNP game from Smiths guard but Smith answers with a nice upkick. Alvarado dives back into Smiths guard but is swept with Smith landing in the sidemount. Smith wastes no time in trapping Joey’s arm and raining down unanswered punches and elbows to Alvarado’s head. Think Newton/Hughes 2. Smith tries to squirm out but is forced to tap out at 1:59 in the 2nd round. Smith tap out (Strikes) 1:59 Rd 2

The last fight of the under card featured 2 sluggers Jerry “Batman” Davis vs. Adrian Perez. Since my ring side seat was taken by its rightful owners half way thru the fight I was unable to see most this match. Perez began by throwing some low kicks and Davis countered with his fists. At one point Perez looks to have been poked in the eye but the crowd begins to boo and the ref does nothing so Perez is forced to engage with Davis again. Batman throws wildly again at Perez landing a few knees after attempting a spinning back fist. This is when I get moved so it gets fuzzy. Perez some how ends up with the upper hand looking to take Batman’s back but Batman escapes. Batman throws a knee that puts Perez down then the fight is ended for some reason I can’t see. Davis Submission 2:21 Rd 1

Brad Doerges: How’s the training going?

Nam Phan: So far so good. With a couple of days till the fight it’s kinda calming down a little bit.

Brad: So who are you training with right now? Are you still with Franco (de Camargo)?

Nam: No me and Franco we had a disagreement, we couldn’t see eye to eye so we split. I stay away from Franco. I train with Marcio Feitosa for Jiu Jitsu with a gi and for no gi I mostly train with Jeremy Williams. For boxing I train with Art James at Westminster Boxing.

Brad: How did you get started in MMA?

Nam: I did Karate since I was a kid for like 8 1/2 years… I also wrestled in high school… I did Jiu Jitsu with Franco for about 5 years… I watched the UFC since I was a kid… I always wanted to do it… So when I started training Jiu Jitsu I told Franco that I wanted to be a fighter because I knew he could get me into some underground fights.

Brad: So who are you fighting this Sunday? I can’t seem to find it anywhere. I have read lots of rumors including San Shou Legend Cung Le.

Nam: (Laughs) That’s Amazing! I saw that. Somebody emailed me that. I was like what are you talking about? I’m not gonna fight my Vietnamese brother.

Brad: Yeah he might be a little big for you too.

Nam: Yeah a little big a little buff you know. Yeah it was a thread on Sherdog. Some of the guys had my back though on the thread so I was pretty happy. I ‘m not challenging any Vietnamese people including Cung Le, he’s a pretty big guy, would probably kick my ass. (Laughs) But at 155 it might be a different story! I probably still wouldn’t fight him. I’m not trying to fight my brothers.

Brad: I heard that you recently grappled with Bill Cooper at Never Tap. How did that go?

Nam: It went very good. Bill Cooper is a very very seasoned grappler. You know I have fought him about 5 times now. The first time I beat him he was only like 16. It was 4-4 in the end but I beat him on an advantage. But the rest of the time he’s has had my number. He’s beat me the other 4 times.

Brad: He’s pretty slick on the ground.

Nam: He’s not bad on the ground. He’s not bad at all. I talked to him he’s telling me he’s gonna do some MMA. Let’s see him pull some half guard shit on me in MMA. (Laughing) I know you are a reporter I just want to let everyone know that me and Bill are friends and I have no animosity towards Bill at all we are buddies. I’m just talking a little trash, nothing personal.

Brad: Did you send the UFC a video for The Ultimate Fighter Season 2?

Nam: You know I was thinking of doing TUF. I think I would do very well but they don’t really have my weight class. All of the guys would be bigger than me. I’m 145 and I have to gain weight to fight at 155. I’m pretty light for my weight class but I train a lot of technique. I think the biggest reason why I didn’t apply for TUF was that I just got accepted to Cal State Fullerton and I just want to finish school. After I graduate I just wan t to really focus on fighting and try to get to Pride and stuff. No distractions.

Brad: Now is a good time to go to Pride with Bushido having that great 155 division…

Nam: I think I would do very well. Get a little more experience and train some more technique. In a couple years I could probably dominate that division.

Brad: Have you ever thought about fighting at 145?

Nam: No no no no no. I fight because I enjoy fighting. Back in high school and college the coach made me cut weight so much that it got to the point that I didn’t enjoy wrestling any more because cutting weight was so serious. I would be torturing myself to get down to 145 and if I was cutting that much weight I wouldn’t enjoy it as much. I like to eat. I like to eat bad un-athletic food. A lot of Tommy’s chili fries and Popeye’s fried chicken.

Brad: Want to thank any of your Sponsors?

Nam: OC Tattoo, NorthStar, Hawaiian Grill, Lake Elsinore Casino, Albaproembroidory.com, Constellation Stereo, cafe’PM/Stars Karaoke Studio, Associated Laboratories , Full Contact Fighter , Sickenlaw , Subfighter.com, Apex Jiu Jitsu, Gracibarrausa.com, Westminster Boxing DG , Bite me mouth guards, and all the guys from Ma Du Entertainment. They have been down with me from day one and they help me out with everything. Oh yeah and MMA-Fighter.com Fo Sure!

Brad: Thanks for the interview see you Sunday.

Nam: You the Man Brad! Have a good one.

King of the Cage Soboba

Sunday March 20, 2005 San Jacinto, California

First up was “Tall” Paul Karsky vs Russ Miura. Now Paul wasn’t on the fight card that I was given at the front gate so I was surprised to see him walking down the ramp. It seemed that Miura’s scheduled opponent had backed out and Karsky had stepped up to fight instead. Its not clear when the switch was made but it must have been that day, as Paul’s name wasn’t even on the card that was printed out an hour before the show. Karksy was quickly taken down, then kneed to the head and body from the sidemount before tapping out to a kimura at 1:45 in the first round.

Jerry “Batman” Davis came out swinging against Alan Wood, who was happy to trade punches with the superhero. Batman seemed to be getting the better of the brawl by hitting Woods with several heavy lefts. The fight went to the ground briefly when Davis got a single leg, but the fighters were quickly stood up due to inactivity. Woods seemed to tire late in the first round but wouldn’t go down as Batman peppered his opponents face with lefts and rights. Woods couldn’t even keep his hands up to defend himself as the first round closed so his corner wisely called the fight. Davis wins at the end of Round 1 by corner stoppage.

My ‘KO of the night’ award was given during the Ray Lazama vs Aaron “Slam” Wetherspoon fight. Wetherspoon came out looking like a specimen, but he would have his hands full for his first fight with the more experienced Lazama. Lazama and Wetherspoon traded a few blows with while Aaron would try to close the distance to gain the clinch. Lazama landed a few punches and some knees to the body before he was eventually taken down by Wetherspoon, who executed a great double leg from the clinch near the fence. Wetherspoon landed some good punches while GNPing from Ray’s guard but eventually the fight was stood up. Shortly after the stand up Ray landed a huge right hook followed by a knee to Wetherspoon’s dazed head to end the fight by knockout with only 8 seconds left in the round. Lazama scored the KO at 4:52 of Round 1.

Although the fight was a minute and thirty seven seconds long I think Jeff Gallaher must have spent a minute twenty in Zack Taylor’sguillotine choke. After Jeff went for a double leg Zack quickly went for the standing guillotine before pulling him into his guard. Jeff, showing great heart, fought off the deep looking choke for over a minute, causing his face to turn dark purple. In a great display of refereeing by Cecil, the fight was called as soon as Jeff went under. Zack Taylor choked out Gallaher at 1.37 of Round 1.

In what I thought would be the quickest fight of the night Jason Von Flue won by side choke in 51 seconds. Nick “Time Bomb” Davanso took Jason down and got mount but was bucked off and ended up quickly tapping after Von Flue got side mount and choked Nick out with his own arm. Von Flue by first round submission in only 51 secs.

In the only 210lb fight of the night Wes “Soldier” Combs came out dressed in a full marine uniform, accompanied by two hot marine assistants who were wearing knee high boots. Combs made quick work of Randall Limond by taking him down and getting the full mount and laying down a barrage of punches that Randall seemed to have no answer for. Wess Combs Round 1 TKO 1:14

Adam Lynn made quick work of Brent Wooten with a big left knee using a technique I have never seen used before. While he had only his right arm under hooked Lynn kept his left hand on the back of Wootens head throwing left knees until one of them connected. Lynn Round 1 KO 1:10

After seeing about 20 people at the casino wearing Nam Phan shirts at the casino and countless others at the fight I became quite curious about this up and coming fighter. Nam and Joey Alverado both came down in blue belts but the crowd came out for Phan who looked ready to give them a show. Both men quickly started trading blows with Phan getting the best of the exchanges. Phan started to get backed into the cage then hit Joey with a big right from the clinch. Joey tried to quickly get away from Phan but he knew that Alverado was hurt and chased after him and landed another big right that sent Joey tumbling to the mat. Phan quickly finished his opponent from the guard while the crowd cheered wildly. After the fight Nam told me “It’s scary in there…” I told him he didn’t look scared to me. Nam Phan Round 1 TKO Ref Stoppage 1:08

Brent Stevens and Wesley Scobee came out throwing hard but both men gassed quickly. Stevens took Scobee down from the clinch and it looked as if Wes had a guillotine attempt but instead Scobee tapped out for no reason that I could see. Stevens by Submission 1:23 Round 1.

Fighting out of Bakersfield Dan Jones came out against a veteran of the octagon Frankie Bohlinger. Dan quickly showed why he is 0-4 in the octagon by letting Bohlinger take him down and move to full mount rather easily. Bohlinger seemed to be giving Jones a break by quickly going for the armbar. Bohlinger Round 1 Sub 1:44

Tony Lopez (No Limits) landed some big knees followed by punches in Tony Galindo’s guard to end the fight while the crowd yelled out “Kill Him Tony!” Lopez R1 3:32 TKO

In the shortest fight of the night Brian Sesma, with Quinton Jackson in his corner, made quick work of Adrian Perez. After an exchange on their feet Perez seemed to lose his balance and fall to the all fours position. Brian swiftly got good postion and rained down several rights that hurt Perez bad enough for ref Herb Dean to stop the fight. Sesma Round 1 KO :17

The first fight of the night to go to decision was Charles Diaz vs Tom Kenney. Diaz controlled the first part of the first fight by going for a guillotene attempt and eventually taking Tom down with a double leg. Diaz did some damage from guard then moved to half guard where he landed a few knees to Denny. After some inactiveness they were stood up and Diaz rushed in and took Kenney down. Once again Diaz was working from the Tom’s guard where Tom tried numerous sweeps that were ineffective. The Round ended with Diaz in Tom’s guard.

Round 2 started with both men throwing. Diaz wanted no part in this and pushed Denney up against the fence. Tom quickly reversed and started throwing down some brutal foot stomps. Tom attempted a whizzer like takedown but Diaz ended up on top working from Toms guard again. The ref stood them up after some inactivity and they began to throw leather with Tom getting the best of it. Tom pinned Diaz up against the fence and once again let more foot stomps go but Diaz came out on top at the end of the second by taking Tom down. A close call but the judges gave it one way, Diaz Decision (Unanimous) 5:00 Round 2

In what looked to be the classic UFC format of style vs style Omar Luv came out in his Thai boxing shorts while Andy Maccarone came out in his Karate Gi. Omar and Andy traded keg kicks, with Omar getting the best of them. Andy’s inability to effectively check Omars kicks eventually led to him rushing in with punches. The fight was eventually taken to the ground with Omar ending up on top. Back on the feet, Andy quickly began throwing punches at Omar. Omar backed away and then peppered Andy with more and more leg kicks. Maccarone was eventually able to close the gap and begin to work the clinch but Luv was too much for him and ended up on top of Andy in sidemount. The tables were quickly turned when Omar attempted a keylock and then got reversed- Andy slid on top of Omar and into full mount but it was too close to the end of the round to score anything big.

Round two saw Luv pushing Andy up against the fence and eventually getting the takedown, throwing a few punches before being stood back up. Omar managed to pin Andy against the fence in a sitting postion and rained knees down onto Macarones skull- Andy protected well and eventually got back to his feet but Omar ended the fight strong by getting a double leg to sidemount. Luv Decision (Unanimous) 5:00 Round 2

Thomas Denny came down the ramp in usual fashion with his daughter and his wife coming down first then followed by himself and about 20 other Denny fans and training partners. Denny starts the round by gaining the clinch and taking Ray Elbe down ending up in the sidemount position. Elbe, using some slick ground work, beautifully gets guard but is quickly pushed up against the face by Denny. Elbe got the double under hooks and stalls till a standup is made. Once stood up they trade a few punches then go back to the clinch where Ray pulls guard. After another standup Denny and Elbe clinch again but somehow Elbe hurts Dennys eye and the fight is briefly stopped for Denny to regain compusure. During the break a lot of boo’s were directed towards Elbe and he responded buy grabbing his crotch and giving everybody the finger. Tom’s eye showed noticeable swelling once the fight was restarted but that didn’t stop him from rushing in and throwing some hard punches and knees then getting a perfect double leg takedown to sidemount. Tom looked to make Ray pay for poking his eye by throwing some heavy knees from the side postion. Denny ended the round with an armbar attempt but was unable to finish it since the bell rang before he could get it fully extended.

Round 2 started with Ray and Thomas trading some punches when Tom got hit by a left that put his knee down on the mat. Denny wasted no time in quickly recovering and striking back with a big double leg takedown. After taking several knees from sidemount Elbe was unable to escape the kimura submission attempted by Denny and was forced to tap out. Denny Submission (Kimura) 1:34 2

The final main event on the card was a good one Charles “Crazy Horse” Bennett vs Gabe Rivas. Although on paper it looked that Bennett would make short work of Rivas, the veteran of RITC, KOTC, and Gladiator Challenge showed that he could be a threat to any top fighter in any of those organizations. The fight started off with Gabe rushing in at Bennett who picked him up and slammed him for one of the biggest slams I have seen in MMA. After a brief scuffle on the ground Gabe secured a deep armbar attempt that looked as if might finish the fight. Crazy Horse stayed calm stood up and shook Rivas off. Both men stood up and began to bang then Charles easily took Rivas down. After some more grappling on the ground where both fighters swept each other Rivas secured another armbar. This time it looked as if Bennett would be unable to stand and shake Rivas off since he was flat on his chest. In another great escape Bennett flipped out of the armbar attempt and ended up with Rivas’ back. The round ended with Bennett hitting Rivas well after the bell had sounded.

Round 2 started with both men exchanging punches. Rivas landed a good punch to which Charles responded by pretending like he is hurt wobbling around the ring making a dazed face. Charles takes down Rivas easily and works from the guard. Rivas try’s several triangle attempts but is forced to let go when Crazy Horse attempts to slam him. Rivas is able to get up and quickly take down Bennett and put together some good punches form Bennett’s guard. Unable to finish the fight from Bennett’s guard Rivas easily passes guard and gets full mount. Rivas throws down some heavy punches from mount while Charles curls up underneath him. Charles covers up well but gives up his back in the process. Charles is able to recover from that position as well but Rivas ends up with sidemount. Charles is able to flip Rivas off of him but ends up in Rivas’s guard fighting off a triangle to uma plata submission attempt. The submission attempts are unsuccessful and Charles is able to pull a draw out of this fight. Draw 5:00 Round 2

In other fights Fernando Gonzalez out lasted Reggie Orr to win the 2 round decision. Rob Kolbeck won his first fight in KOTC against Eric Torres by Submission (Triangle Choke) 1:47 Round 1 and Chris Monso lost his first fight to Josh Hinger by Submission (Armbar) 2:58 Round 1.

This isn’t going to be like the other reviews. I am not going to give you a synopsis or summary, I am going to do an actual review and give you my opinions and criticisms of the show and its characters. This show has a different feel to it than the other shows, mainly because Leben was gone and Southworth was gone. A lot of the big players on the show removed, the show focused on its more minor characters, Diego Sanchez and Josh Rafferty. Well Leben is obviously back now but the show wasn’t really about him.

Speaking of Leben, Team Couture should just be called Team Quest 2. Its blatant favoritism for his actual team, and the main reason he lost so much early on the show was because he used his first 2 votes to pick Leben and Quarry which left him with a weaker LHW selection. Quarry is out because of an injury and its strange how the show really didn’t focus on the drama of Randy causing the injury. Alex S. apologized for the incident but it was Randy charging at him and tackling him into Nate in the first place. Then Nate speaks about bringining someone back who is respectful and is not a trouble maker, and he brings back Leben. I don’t know if he was trying to be ironic, my guess Nate doesn’t really show a comical side but I sense that was his dry sense of humor saying all that and picking Leben. People really shouldn’t be upset with his choice though because Leben was the only real choice, out of all the eliminated fighters, Leben was still the best. Another note, I never heard mention of Leben and Quarry on the show being from the same team as Couture outside of the show and their closeness must look strange to the outside viewer and would make some of the house problems less dramatic.

From episode one, I felt the favorites were Quarry, Leben, and Sanchez for the MW’s and Griffin, Southworth, and Swick for the LHWs. With Southworth gone, I feel Bonner is also up there as a man to beat if not THE man to beat. Quarry I thought had a really good chance of taking it all but I guess we will never find out. Diego right now is the zen master to beat, but no one has yet exploited his size in the show, he is a natural 170lber and moved up to MW for this opportunity. He is by far the best grappler on the show though, some say Florian who is a BJJ black belt but he does not have the takedowns and wrestling of Diego, and Diego has done better than Florian in no gi, beating Javier Vasquez and Pablo Popovitch in competition and being undefeated in MMA.

In the team competitions hosted by Willa Ford (who is super HOT and the best speaker out of all the UFC girls up to date), Team Quest 2 did it again turning the tides and winning another team competition. Enter Josh Rafferty as the new lead for this episode. He was built up a little bit over the last couple of episodes, now you see what he is really like. He basically comes off as a coward and doesn’t really feel he has a chance of winning this whole thing and doesn’t want to face his old teammates because he knows in training they were whipping him. What did Rafferty expect? Like he said, ultimate fighting is not a team sport and sooner or later everyone fights and there can be only one. What surprised me was he admitted he has no skills on the ground and is only so so on the stand up. Then what is he doing on this show? Why is he even fighting for that matter? He didn’t want to fight Florian at all, and you could see he would rather see Leben fight. Leben though just fought and it would make no sense for him to just come back and fight again. It was up to Rafferty, and seeing how Leben couldn’t defend Koscheck’s takedowns, I don’t think he wanted any part of Koscheck either. He picked Diego in my opinion because he felt he had a puncher’s chance with him, and by calling out the baddest dude of the lot, he would not look as bad in his loss.

On one side you have undefeated KOTC welterweight champion and Gaidojiutsu Jackson Submission Wrestling expert Diego Sanchez against Team Meat Truck middleweight fighter trained under Jorge Gurgel and Rich Franklin, Josh Rafferty. The fight went like it should have, it was a one sided war like Germany invading France on both occasions. Diego was sending a message to Dana and all the other MWs that if you pick him, this is what happens. What’s funny is Josh Rafferty and his old teammates went to talk to Diego who was already in fight mode to kind of calm him down a bit (I think everyone knew what Diego would do to him and Florian and Koscheck didn’t want to see their old teammate be brutalized, at the same time it didn’t seem like either of them would have as much problem fighting Rafferty like he did with picking them). It looked like Josh went there to ask him to go easy on him, its just competiton, lets try to win not hurt each other. Diego didn’t seem to care, it was just business to him. As funny as Diego is, at that moment, he looked like the emotionless bully in the school who you somehow ended up getting into a fight with, and as much as you try to talk your way out of it, its already set and to him its not personal, just business and there is no way out, at three o’clock you fight. Maybe at lunch, you shouldn’t have told him he talks like a retard.

What did we learn in this episode that I think everyone knew except Rafferty? That this is business and there is no friends in business. Even Quarry and Leben I think would have fought each other, that’s how Team Quest is.

The end of the show had some technical difficulties and you didn’t really know what the next episode had in store but Josh was out of the show now and there is only 9 fighters left with the live televised fight just weeks away. Rafferty proclaims he will make it back to the UFC, I wouldn’t bet on that but I really hope he proves me wrong, I always like to root for the underdog.
