Fighter Watch: Brendon O’Dell Interview - By Brad Doerges
Name: Brendon O’DellPlace of birth: Okinawa, Japan Birthday: 7/10/1983 Amateur Fight Record: 6-1 Brad Doerges – Do you have a nickname? If so where did it come from? Brendon O’Dell – Hollywood, My Friend Tanner was the first to start calling me Hollywood. Everyone would go get water and take a break and I would go to my bag and get on my cell phone. Brad – How long have you competed in MMA? Brendon – I have been training and fighting for about 16 months now. Brad – How did you get started in MMA? Brendon – I don’t know I just did it one day out of the blue. I really liked BJJ when I was in the army and we would always fight in the back bay area, and I always talked about fighting like they do in UFC and Pride. Then my Tattoo guy said there is a gym up the street and to go check it out. I called the gym owner and he called me back. Been doing it ever since. Brad – When Did you know that you wanted to compete? Brendon – When I saw the UFC I thought one day it would be cool as hell to do that, then I just kind of forgot about it. Until I heard about the gym that taught MMA where I was living and just did it. Brad – What is your favorite fight you competed in? Brendon – Well of course my first fight cause there was nothing I have ever done like it. Of course my first title fight was also great because I was a huge underdog and I came out there and did my thing. Brad – Who do you train with right now? Brendon – I train with Keith Wilson and Drew out of the Tool Shed. Brad – How do you like the Tool Shed? Brendon – I love it, the people there are great and it’s like a very close family. Keith and Drew know what they are talking about and they have the knowledge to pass it down, they have been in the fight game for a very long time. Brad – Ever thought of going to a major camp in Colorado? Brendon – I am in a big camp… LOL.. All of the “bigger camps” are way up north, and I am very happy where I am at, I am still learning and I am still getting things out of my camp so there is no reason to move. Brad – Who is the best fighter coming out of your camp? Brendon – We are all studs. Right now we have the best LW in the state of Colorado with Eric, and we have Donnie in the IFL right now. Tori is also ranked number 3 in the USA for woman’s wrestling. All of the active fighters have belts or are doing big big things. Brad – What do you like to do when you are not training or fighting? Brendon – SLEEP, lol.. I enjoy hanging out with the family and just relaxing. I work very early in the morning so it is just that and chillen. I do go out every now and then but not very often. Brad – What is your favorite MMA moment? Brendon – Wow there are so many of them, I would have to say UFC 40 when Tito whooped up on Ken, and the when Randy dropped Tim with the big right hand and then whooped on him for 25 min. Brad – Have you ever held any rank or titles? If so what ones? Brendon – Yeah right now I have the Rocky Mountain States WW title, and this Saturday I am fighting for the Kickdown WW title. Brad – Who do you look up to? Brendon – My coaches and my favorite fighters. Brad – What is your favorite fighting technique? Brendon – I don’t know, my first few fights I was a stand up guy, and then I went on a subbing run. So I like it all, I want people to know that they have to watch out for me wherever, I don’t wanna be know as a fighter who only has one strong point. Brad – Are you married and/or have kids? Brendon – Not right now I am engaged to a lovely lady, and she has a kid. We would like to have more someday and also get married but not at this time. Brad – Why do the fans in Denver like you? Brendon – I don’t know, I am very respectful and I bring it every time I come to the ring. Brad – What is your ultimate goal in MMA? Brendon – Come on now. LOL …. I want to be a full time fighter, and make it in the big show and be on TV. I think that would be the biggest rush. Some questions about your fight this Saturday – Kick Down 37 "Lights Out" Budweiser Events Center, May 12, 2007 Brad – Who is Kyle Johnson? Brendon – Hahaha. LOL.. He is the guy I am fighting next, and we were in the same gym at one time. Brad – How long did you train with him? Brendon – I would have to say probably about 4 or 5 months.
Brad – Is there bad blood between you and Kyle? Your camps? Brendon – I don’t know I have not talked to him since I left, I will say I don’t hate him. I guess it's just what we do, if someone is out there to fight we have to fight. I will also say there are people that I WILL not fight. That’s cause a lot of people there have been there since I have been there. CAMPS hell yeah, A lot of the people at my camp like me started out at the other gym. THEN got wise just like me and made the jump. So yeah we don’t talk s**t but they do at the other gym, so you can bet this fight is very important to me with the title being on the line and the fact that my first fight back is against my old camp. Brad – How do you see the fight turning out? Brendon – Well Kyle is a wrestler so I see him trying to come right out and take me down. So I should try and keep it standing to wear him out, or just let him get the take down and sub him out. Brad – Will you go pro if you win this fight? If not when? Brendon – NO. A lot of people ask this question, but I am someone who wants to fight for a long time, and make it somewhere big. Once you go pro you can’t go back, so when my camp thinks I am ready to make the next step I will… Brendon would like to thank his sponsers. Leslie Garcia of Certified Mortgage Solutions, Hostile Clothing, MMABuzz.com Holey Rollers Tattoo, MMA-Fighter.com, and Mike R from mmabuzz with all the help on BrendonODell.com. Of course I would like to thank every member of the Tool Shed for pushing me and getting me ready for my fight.
